A Trio of First Time Winners Highlight Action at Wiscasset Speedway
Wiscasset Speedway returned to action last Saturday night with a full card of racing in Group 1 presented by Knox Machine Company of Warren, plus an appearance by the Wicked Good Vintage Racers. By the end of the show, three new winners grabbed the top spots in victory lane, including a young man who made track history.
The Maxwell’s Market Super Streets once again had fans on the edge of their seats for their 40 lap spotlight feature. A handful of cautions shook up the running order and the race wasn’t settled until a wild final lap restart. In the end, point leader James Osmond of Wiscasset claimed the first place trophy after taking the lead from Boothbay’s Jason Oakes as the pair passed under the white flag. The two made contact, sending Oakes to the top of turn one along with co-point leader Matt Beers and bringing out the caution. The field lined up for a one-lap dash to the checkers, with Osmond crossing the line first, followed by Sean Johnson or Oakland and Saco’s Devin Curit. As of press-time, the result of the race remains unofficial pending post-race inspection of shocks from the top 3 cars.
In support division action, Shane Webber of New Vinyard led wire to wire for his first victory in the Schooner Bay Taxi Thunder 4 Mini 25 lap feature. He race pressured throughout the race by Pownal’s Michael Golding, who settled for second. The final spot in victory lane went to Alna’s Jeff Farrington, who took advantage of several mid-race cautions to work his way up from the back of the 16 car field.
The Wicked Good Vintage Racers Early Late Model Division took the track for a 30 lap feature. Warren’s Keith Smalley held off all challengers on the way to the win in his 56′ Chevy. Ben Overlock of Warren brought his 64′ Ford Falcon to the runner-up finish, followed by Parker Long of Boothbay in a 64′ Ford Fairlane.
The Norms Used Cars Pro Stocks saw another first-time winner, as former Driver of the Year Logan Melcher of Fayette led the caution-free 40 lap feature green to checkers to secure his first career Pro Stock victory. While Melcher ran relatively unchallenged for the win, a heated battle for the two remaining spots in victory lane over the final 5 laps ramped up the excitement. Thomaston’s Rodney Brooks held the runner-up spot for much of the race but succumbed to a last-lap pass by Sidney’s Kevin Douglass – Douglass taking the 2nd place trophy by just 0.08 seconds. Brooks settled for 3rd and his first podium finish of the year. History was made in the final race of the night, as young Cole Binnette led 24 of the 25 laps in the Brackett’s Market 4-Cylinder Pro division feature to claim his first career win. Just 2-weeks removed from his 12th birthday, Binnette became the second-youngest feature winner in Wiscasset Speedway’s 52-year history. He was joined in victory lane by Buxton’s Nicole Benincasa and point leader Jet Decker of Chesterville.
