Chase Dowling, Doug Coby Racing Set for Battle at Oswego Speedway
MILFORD, Conn. — While Doug Coby Racing owner Doug Coby competes at Stafford Motor Speedway in the SRX Series on Saturday, June 12, the rest of the team will head to round five of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season at Oswego Speedway for the Steel Palace 150.
With rising star Chase Dowling behind the wheel, the No. 10 Mayhew Tools machine will roll around the .625-mile Oswego oval in search of victory. Dowling and the team will be looking to maintain DCR’s spot in the owners championship standings — as Coby will not receive driver points for the race. A strong run will keep the team near the top of the owners championship, which is separate from the drivers title during the season.
Doug Coby Racing crew chief Phil Moran is excited to work with Dowling at the New York oval. In the last four appearances at Oswego, the team has finished sixth or better in all events.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” Moran said. “I’ve known Chase for five or six years — he works on his own car just two miles away from my shop. I think we have a good relationship, I know he can drive. He was on the top of the list when we were talking about who was going to drive for us.”
Moran also knows the challenges that Oswego presents for a race team. As one of the fastest tracks the Whelen Modified Tour visits, Oswego also has a boilerplate on the inside wall that makes the corners tight on the bottom.
“It’s a fast race track, and the boilerplate on the inside wall definitely makes it challenging,” Moran said. “We have run well there before with Doug, winning in 2016… we feel confident going into it.”
The schedule for race day includes one practice session, from 3-4 p.m., with Mayhew Tools pole qualifying set to go green at 6 p.m. The green flag for the Steel Palace 150 is set for 7:30 p.m., and the race will also air live on NBC Sports Gold and their TrackPass platform.
