Mchugh Earns First US Win in Hampshire Classic at Waynesfield; Chapple Scores 3rd Straight BOSS Win

WAYNESFIELD, Ohio – After the crazy year that was 2020, it just seemed appropriate an Australian would get his first sprint car win in the United States as America celebrates its Independence Day. Lachlan McHugh, from Gold Coast Queensland, Australia, led the last 25 laps of the Third Annual Bob Hampshire Classic at Waynesfield Raceway Park Saturday, July 3 to score his first victory in the U.S. and the first for his Jim Muth owned team.

McHugh traded the lead several times at the beginning of the race with veteran Todd Kane before assuming control on lap 11. McHugh picked his way through traffic to score the $4,000 payday for the Hampshire which was sanctioned by the Ti22 Performance FAST On Dirt Series.

“I actually came to American like four years ago just spectating and really loved this track when I came. I really looked forward to running here. I didn’t run as good as I wanted to during speedweek. It’s good to recover and get a good run tonight. I felt really fast the first half of the race and made it to the front which was pretty critical because once the rubber was down you couldn’t really do a lot of passing. Happy for the 101 sprint car team. It’s their first win and my first win in America,” said McHugh beside his Valvolione/Running Boxer Farm/SEDL Civil Contractors backed machine.

Willow Branch, Indiana’s Isaac Chapple made history Saturday. Chapple took the lead in the 12th Annual Jack Hewitt Classic with just six laps to go and drove to his third consecutive win with the MPD Racing Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series, the first driver to accomplish that feat in the 11 year history of the series. And, Chapple scored the three straight wins in three different states.

“This is the biggest win of my career. It was a hard fought race. Just keeping up with the track…I had a lot of work to do,” said Chapple beside his Gray Auto/S&M Construction/Van Hoy Oil/No Drama Zone 20/PGG Enterprises backed machine

Ian Creager survived a caution with just two laps to go and drove to the win in the USAC Thunder Midgets.

“On that restart I was mad at myself when two guys got by me but then the red came out and they told me the one was penalized for being beside me before the cone. I just had to concentrate on hitting my marks,” said Creager beside his Donners Bay Resort, Concept Machine/KSD Insurance/Site X Inc. backed #36.

Pole-sitter Todd Kane jumped into the lead at the drop of the green for the 35 lap FAST feature with Caleb Griffith, Cale Conley, Lee Jacobs and McHugh in tow. Kane and Griffith ran side by side over the first four laps before McHugh joined the fun. McHugh drove from third to the lead on laps six and seven with Kane regaining the top spot for laps 8-10 before McHugh regained the top spot.

McHugh started to pull away in the non-stop event while things heated up behind him. Jacobs took third on lap 14 and drove into second four laps later and started to close on McHugh in lapped traffic with 16 laps to go. Now the car on the move was Travis Philo who took third on lap 22 as Cap Henry drove into fourth.

With five laps to go McHugh had sliced his way through traffic to pull away while Jacobs, Philo and Henry battled for seconds. DJ Foos joined that fun with three laps remaining but no one could catch McHugh. Jacobs, Henry, Foos and Philo rounded out the top five.

Steve Irwin and Matt Westfall brought the field to green for the 30 lap Hewitt Classic with Irwin grabbing the lead over Lee Underwood, Westfall and Korbyn Hayslett. Underwood drove into the lead on lap three and built a nearly four second lead in the non-stop event by lap 12. However, the car on the move was Chapple who took third on lap 12, driving into second on lap 14.

Heavy lapped traffic allowed Chapple to chop Underwood’s lead in half by the half-way point.  Chapple drove into the lead on lap 24 and had a few close calls with lapped cars before taking the checkers over Underwood, Hayslett, Westfall and Irwin.

Gunnar Lucius grabbed the early lead of the 20-lap midget A-main with Creager holding onto second. Lucius built a sizeable lead until a lapped car spun in front of him, collecting him on lap 13.

Creager inherited the lead and held off Bryce Massingill and Creager until a caution flew with just two laps to go. On the restart officials determined Jacob Denny had jumped on the restart  – which was followed by a red flag. Denny was moved back two spots giving the lead back to Creager who drove to the win.

Waynesfield Raceway Park Promoter Shane Helms would like to thank the following sponsors of the Hewitt-Hampshire Classic: Kistler Engines, Tommy Tire, North Baltimore Custom Cut Meats, Marion Laborers Local 574, Buckeye Machine, Cook & Son Heating and Plumbing, Sugar Street Bar and Grill and Northwest Towing and Recovery.
