Marshall Rebounds for Double-Point Win at Midseason Championships – YankeeRacer.com

Marshall Rebounds for Double-Point Win at Midseason Championships

N. Woodstock, NH — Gilman, VT’s Jeff Marshall got his season back on track just in time to capture the C&S Auto Parts/NAPA Midseason Championships at North Woodstock, NH’s White Mountain Motorsports Park on Saturday, July 10. Marshall took the lead from South Barre, VT’s Mike “Beetle” Bailey just past halfway in the double-point 60-lap feature to earn his first Foley Oil & Propane Late Model win of the season.

It was a much-needed rebound for Marshall, who had failed to finish the previous two features. In the process, the veteran became the eighth different White Mountain Late Model winner in nine events this year.

Marshall rolled to the initial green flag in third but got shuffled back early as outside polesitter John Donahue set the early pace. By lap three, Marshall was already back to seventh before finally finding his way out of the box.

Once he got loose, Marshall slowly worked his way back forward. He caught a big break when Donahue and rookie Kasey Beattie got together racing for the lead on lap six. That handed the lead to Bailey with Marshall snatching third from Laci Potter on the restart. He then got past Matthew Morrill and set his sights on Bailey.

The Beetle was able to hold the lead on a lap-15 restart after Beattie spun again. However, lap 31 proved to be his Waterloo. After Potter found trouble to bring out the initial caution, Mark Patten crashed in turn two on the restart. The second attempt to go green saw Marshall get the jump and take over the lead.

Bailey, Alby Ovitt, and Jimmy Renfrew Jr. kept the pressure on through two more yellows, which included a tangle between Morrill and Stacy Cahoon with 11 laps to go. Marshall showed why he’s a former Late Model champion in the region, though, as he marched untouched to the double-point victory.

Candia, NH’s Renfrew got the best of the battle for second. Raymond, NH’s Ovitt took third after starting dead last. Bailey, Oren Remick, Quinny Welch, Beattie, Donahue, Jerry Lesage, and Jason Kenison rounded out the top-10.

Waterbury Center, VT’s Jason Woodard got his fourth straight Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tiger victory and fifth of the year in the closest way possible. Woodard began the event, which consistent of two 30-lap segments, by finishing third in the first segment. The four-time Thunder Road champion followed his son Tanner Woodard and three-time champion Shane Sicard across the finish line.

The field was then inverted for the second 30-lap segment. Littleton, NH’s Ryan Ware started up front after a flat tire in segment one and went pole-to-pole for the victory. Behind him, the top three from the first segment quickly slashed through the field. Jason Woodard eventually got to the second spot with Sicard right on his bumper. They remained that way for the rest of the segment with Tanner Woodard crossing the finish line not far behind.

That result created a three-way tie for the overall win, with the two Woodards and Sicard scoring five points each. By virtue of the better finish in the final segment, Jason Woodard took the first-place trophy on the tiebreaker. Sicard was second with Tanner Woodard third. Ware and Matthew Potter completed the overall top-five.

Groveton, NH’s “Lucky” Luke Shannon kept pace with Jason Woodard by getting his fifth win of the season in the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Mini’s. The rookie started 11th in the double-point 30-lap feature and wheeled his way to the front like he had four times already this year.

Shannon was already up to fourth when the first caution flew on lap 12 for Kerri Driscoll’s spin. When the race resumed, Shannon needed just three laps to dispose of Tyler Thompson, Jack Hayes, and Donnie Baumgardner. He then survived two more cautions to pad his point lead.

Fellow rookie Baumgardner of North Woodstock, NH made big gains in the standings with a runner-up finish. Littleton, NH’s Thompson completed the podium. Mike Smith, Eric Boucher, Scott Senecal, Jillian Baumgardner, Hayes, Todd Derrington, and Gavin McGinnis followed Thompson across the line.

Reigning Arnolds Wayside Diner Dwarf Car champion Jason Wyman finally got his first win of the year in their 30-lap feature. Wyman’s teammate Colby Bourgeois seemed to have the race in the bag until Howie Switser and Kevin Wyman tangled twice in a three-lap span — the second of which caused both cars to need a tow off the track.

On the final restart with 10 laps to go, Easton, NH’s Jason Wyman launched forward to secure the lead. Bourgeois then had his hands full holding off two-time winner Tommy Smithers, which let Wyman drive away for the victory. Jeff Ainsworth and Dave Gyger completed the top-five.

Waterford, VT’s McKenna Merchant got her second win of the year in the Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Trucks. Merchant beat Owen Rogers off the front row to start the 15-lap feature, then had a rearview mirror full of Gilmanton, NH’s Thomas Smithers VI. However, the young lady outran Smithers, building enough of a gap that she could cruise home. Barton, VT’s Damion Sicard finished third.
