Andy Jankowiak Wins Lancaster’s Ol’ Boy Cup
LANCASTER, NY (July 10, 2021) … After taking the lead on lap four of the Ol’ Boy Cup 60 at New York International Raceway Park at Lancaster, second-generation driver Andy Jankowiak from Tonawanda, NY drove away to pick up the victory in the first appearance of the season for the Tour-Type Modifieds. Nik Welshans from West Falls, NY was victorious in the 25-lap feature for the Street Stocks. Erik Musto from Lockport, NY scored the victory in the Jerry Gradl Motors NYPA TQ Midgets feature. David Brunka from Cheektowaga, NY was victorious in the 4 Cylinder feature.
Timmy Catalano and George Skora III were on the front row for the Ol’ Boy Cup 60 for the Modifieds and it was Catalano showing the way. Amy Catalano got loose in the 56 in turn two to bring out the races’ first caution. Andy Jankowiak would take over second and would go after Timmy Catalano for the lead. Jankowiak would take over the lead from Catalano before a lap five caution for debris. On the restart, Jankowiak and Skora would pull away as Daren Scherer raced in third. Timmy Catalano would regain the third position and Scott Wylie would get around Scherer for fourth before the races midway point. Catalano would take over second from Skora and Wylie would move into third after passing Skora. Wylie would take over second following a lap 38 restart. Patrick Emerling would move into third place after getting underneath Catalano, as US Open winner Daryl Lewis Jr entered the top five. Patrick Emerling would take over second place from Wylie on lap 45 and would go after race leader Jankowiak. Wylie would reel back in Emerling in the late going for second place as Jankowiak pulled away. Jankowiak would go on to score the win, his first win in a car that he and his team built from the ground up. Patrick Emerling finished in second and Scott Wylie would complete the top three.
Max Northem and Dylan Carbone shared the front row for the Street Stock feature, and it was Northem jumping into the lead. Nik Welshans took over second from Carbone early on and would start to pressure Northem for the lead. Tommy Wentland spun in turn four to bring out the races’ first caution. On the restart, Mark Hoch would move into the top four after passing Carbone and then would challenge Frank Prell for third. Hoch would complete the pass and take over third place. Nik Welshans looked underneath Northem for the lead and would complete the pass. Hoch’s strong run would come to an end on lap 12 after letting go the rear end. On the restart, Nik Welshans would pull away as the battle for second heated up between Tim Welshans, Max Northem, and Rich Sharpe. Ken Maltby moved into the top five and would challenge Rich Sharpe on lap 15, following a restart. Sharpe would move into third on lap 20 and would go after Max Northem for second. Nik Welshans would go on to score the win. Ken Maltby drove from 17th to cross the line in fifth.
Moose Rutherford and Tony Petrea was on the front row for the Jerry Gradl Motors NYPA TQ Midgets main event and it was Rutherford showing the way. Off a lap one restart, a multi-car incident took place in turn one, as Mark Schulz and Vinnie Christiano III flipped. Schulz was able to continue and Christiano was done for the event. The restart would see the original front row with Rutherford and Petrea bringing the field back to the green flag and it was Rutherford showing the way. Erik Musto would take the lead away from Rutherford on lap three with Bobby Holmes taking over second and Dave Wollaber going three-wide to take over third. Wollaber and Holmes would battle for several laps with Wollaber taking over second. The late-race dash to the checkers would see Musto holding off Holmes and Wollaber to score the win. The Jerry Gradl Motors NYPA TQ Midget finish is under protest and will be deemed unofficial.
Chris Deyoe and Andy Danielwicz was on the front row for the 4-cylinder feature, and it was Deyoe showing the way. Dan Dressel would take over the lead in the early stages of the 20-lap feature. David Brunka would take over the lead on lap seven with Charles Palmer looking for second around Dressel. On the lap 10 restart, Palmer would move into second and would look for the lead. Brunka would go on to score the win.

Stock car racing resumes at NYIRP at Lancaster Speedway & Dragway on Thursday, July 22 with the running of the annual Summer Slam for the Sportsman. They will be joined by the 602 Sportsman, Street Stocks, the Jerry Gradl Motors NYPA TQ Midgets, and the 4 Cylinders. Pit gates will open at 3:30 pm, with grandstands opening at 5:00 pm.
