CRSA Winners Whipple & Trombley Go Flag-To-Flag Saturday At LOLR
Haers & Guererri take open-wheel checkers, Pangrazio & Eldredge continue full-fender assault
Canandaigua, NY – August 14, 2021 – Land Of Legends Raceway got back on track in a big way Saturday night with local leadfoot Jason Whipple and tour traveler Jeff Trombley sharing victory lane in the SuperGen Products with Champion Power Equipment CRSA Sprint Car Series doubleheader.
Both wingman scored flag-to-flag wins, albeit by less than a half-second, with Whipple nipping Alysha Bay in the make-up 20-lap 305 A-Main presented by A-Verdi Storage Containers that was postponed due to rain on June 19 while Trombley staved off a late rally by Darryl Ruggles in the Danny Willmes Memorial nightcap, Canandaigua’s 2021 CRSA finale headlined by Auction Direct USA and Midstate Basement Authorities
Taking their own checkered flags in the high-speed Saturday Spectacular at the Ontario County Fairgrounds were Justin Haers (Pepsi Big-Block Modified), Frank Guererri Jr. (Speed Connection Sportsman), Josh Pangrazio (Eldredge & Sons Scrap Recycling Street Stock) and Justin Eldredge (Lloyd’s Contracting Hobby Stock). Haers and Pangrazio snapped short win streaks of division point leaders Erick Rudolph (Mod) and Jimmy Grant (Sts) to collect an additional $100 Prouty’s Bar Bounty.
Kicking off the evening’s activity was a special ceremony behind the main grandstand honoring all-time Canandaigua division winners Paul Guererri and Mike Welch as well as former track official Fred Taney as the latest additions to the growing Land Of Legends Wall of Fame. This top-notch trio joined fellow ’21 classmate Steve Paine, who was inducted on the fairgrounds in June.
Both Guererri and Welch remain active today racing weekly at Canandaigua, with each seasoned chauffeur looking to savor his first victory of the year. Guererri from Geneva won the first of 45 Sportsman features in 1997 while Lyons’ Welch earned his initial Street Stock triumph in 2000 en route to making 81 more victory lane trips.
First taking his turn as a driver in the 1960s, for the next three decades Taney was an integral part of the officiating landscape at the local bullrings, serving his last 20 years under DIRT Motorsports founder Glenn Donnelly and calling Canandaigua Speedway home every Saturday during the summer months. Fred sustained massive internal injuries after being struck by a stray racer at Canandaigua on Aug. 23, 1997, tragically passing away at age 59 although an annual memorial racing event was run in his honor during the years that followed.
With LOLR Promoter Paul Cole popping the cork on his WoF creation in 2018,
Donald ‘Dutch’ Hoag, ‘Barefoot’ Bob McCreadie, Glenn Donnelly and Alan Johnson gained charter membership in the inaugural induction. The Class of ’19 was comprised of Steve Pesarek, Milt Johnson, Gary Montgomery and Gary & Donna Spaid while CoVid restrictions sidelined the annual tribute last season.
The winged warriors were back in town attracting a track-best turnout of 26 Mike Emhof Motorsports 305 sprinters to the hallowed half-miler, all out to match the success of Bobby Parrow who claimed round #1 of the CRSA traveling tour in May.
Whipple was up to the challenge in the initial holdover A-Main, in what might may be the 2017 LOLR track champion’s swan song at his long-time weekend hangout.
“Alysha just said I can’t quit and I told her this is probably going to be our last year for awhile,” divulged Whipple, now 47, following his seventh career MEM 305 triumph at Canandaigua and first-ever in CRSA competition. “Been getting too tiring lately, just time to take a little bit of a break.”
Once chief starter Scott Hixson’s first green flag flew, the rejuvenated driver from nearby Shortsville blasted by pole-sitter Bay and tried not to look back as weekend rivals Ruggles and Brandyn Griffin joined Bay hot on his trail. Whipple’s Gavenda-powered #38 Bauer’s Garage-Termotto’s Homescape-Nu-Way Auto Parts/Maxim rim-rode high kicking up dust on the cushion while his counterparts closed the gap clinging to the low lane as laps frantically clicked off.
While all-time LOLR sprint winner Ruggles charged from eighth to fourth by the halfway point, his daring daughter held second for the duration despite traffic aiding her effort over the final five laps. When Whipple slipped even higher exiting turn two on the final circuit, bottom-feeding Bay crept underneath down the back chute, ultimately falling just 0.127-sec. shy of victory as the lead pair broke the wire in crowd-pleasing fashion.
Griffin chased the “Queen of Speed” across the line followed by her father the “Motorized Madman” with Trombley holding together for a fifth-place tally.
“Towards the end of the race the high side was going away, going away and I kept trying to go easy in (turns) one and two but the car just kept pushing up,” explained Whipple, after becoming the fourth first-time CRSA winner in 2021 and 72nd since it was launched in 2006. “Thankfully, Alysha was just far enough away from us at the end. This win was very much needed, just so happy (grounds crew) put down some water on that high side to get me by for 20 laps.”
Another quality field of winged warriors signed up for the regularly scheduled show with $1,250 added to the purse of the first-ever Danny Willmes Memorial event. Steve Glover, Griffin and Ruggles won preliminary races, with $50 split among the top-3 heat finishers. A former competitor himself turned race sponsor then loyal supporter of both Ruggles and Bay, Willmes suffered through a terminal illness before passing away on Sept. 2, 2019 at age 66.
Outside front row was the place to be for the CRSA contingent as Altamont NY invader Trombley out-dragged David Ferguson to set the early pace. While the opening 10-miler ran off caution-free, contact with Ruggles’ rear bumper entering turn four ended with Ethan Gray’s mount getting sideways to slow the action on lap three. Yellow lights flashed twice more when Dan Craun’s ride broke on lap four and Tucker Donath spun rounding the first corner with six laps still to go.
Starting sixth in the 20-lap Willmes Memorial, Ruggles was once again a man on the move, charging around Ferguson and setting his sights on Trombley. Ferguson regained his runner-up status on lap eight yet was stymied behind traffic to turn over second to ’20 CRSA high point man Ruggles.
Despite Donath’s lap 14 loop tightening the pack in his rear-view mirror, Trombley pulled away back under green. In his own quest for career sprint win #42 in Canandaigua, Ruggles remained in touch, shadowing the winner with a separation of only 0.461-sec. measured at the stripe followed by Ferguson, Parrow and Bay.
“Car was good, really went wherever I needed to go, the key is to keep the tires hooked,” remarked Trombley, 63, a three-time CRSA points champion (2017-19) after posting his 10th career tour triumph, his third in Canandaigua worth a cool $1,000. “Have to thank my wife for drawing the pole, never hurts to start out with a clear track ahead.”
A former Big-Block Modified driver, Trombley has fared far better in an open-cockpit car at Canandaigua, running seven Super DIRTcar Series shows and registering three Top-10s with a best finish of 6th-place in 1993. Saturday marked his first win at LOLR sporting a black no. 3A Warren’s Auto Body-Powder Tech-Helderburg Excavating & Trucking-Roosevelt’s Towing/XXX/Grant, as the initial two victories were scored steering his customary yellow entry.
“I took this (black) car out because I thought it was better than the other (yellow) one and it really feels good,” added Trombley, after extending his points lead in the current CRSA standings through 10 events. “Got into a little jingle in the first race and had to replace an axle in the friont-end. The guys did an awesome job getting us here. It even took awhile just getting to the track, hope everybody is alright in that (bus) wreck on the thruway. The ride home will definitely be a shorter one for us.”
Track favorite Haers made short work of the star-studded Big-Block field, wrestling the lead away from second-generation upstart Daniel Johnson Jr. on lap 19 and cruising on home for a comfortable 10-sec. victory over versatile driver Matt Farnham.
“That was a pretty special race right there,” exclaimed Haers, 41, in the second caution-free feature of the night, his third of the year in wine country worth $2,000. “I tell you what, about every five years you get a race car to just go wherever you want it to. Don’t ask me why … its the same set-up, we didn’t change anything from the heat race to the feature. But it just went, this car was unbelievable, ran flawless.”
Haers filed in eighth on the 17-car starting grid to begin the 35-lap Modified main but it was the youngest Johnson from Middlesex demanding more attention out front. The son of Hall of Famer Danny Johnson, 29 year-old Daniel returned from a vicious front-stretch flip suffered just 10 days earlier in the Super DIRTcar Series showdown at LOLR to lead the pack aboard the refurbished no. 27J Traction Grabber TEO Pro machine.
For fans focusing on Johnson’s stellar run around the ultra-smooth speedway, they missed a dynamite drive to the front by Haers. The popular Phelps pilot broke into the front-five with a handful of laps complete, stole fourth from ‘AJ Slideways’ Alan Johnson on lap seven, whistled past ‘Super’ Matt Sheppard by lap nine, before finally disposing of runner-up Farnham in a daring three-wide dash that stranded Marcus Dinkins in the middle with 17 laps complete.
Still hungry Haers then ducked low exiting turn two in the hooked-up #3 Honeoye Auto Parts-Phelps Cement Products-FLX Home Solutions-Jeff Jolly Masonry Bicknell entry housing a Finger Lakes powerplant, leaving Johnson in his wake more than halfway through the fast-paced finale.
“After the heat race I thought (car) felt okay, just didn’t really go anywhere,” recalled Haers, after the convincing straightaway win over Farnham, with Sheppard and Rudolph dropping Johnson to fifth in a last-lap rush mired in heavy traffic. Ironically, his 17th career Big-Block win at the fairgrounds ties him on the all-time LOLR list with Charlie Rudolph, whose son Erick now leads Justin by only nine markers, 687-678, with just two point shows remaining. Rudolph captured his lone Canandaigua crown in 2018 while Haers tied Sheppard for high-point honors the year prior before more feature wins awarded Matt with the overall title.
“Talked to my crew after qualifying and we all kinda came to the same decision, just go with what we’ve been doing all year and see where we end up. Knew I was pretty good when I was able to roll by Sheppard, its been a long time since I’ve been able to pass him. Seems like I’m always following him so that was an awesome win for us. Always say, don’t know if this will be my last win so I cherish every single one of them. Hopefully we can get a couple more,” Haers added.
While Guererri’s run in the 25-lap Sportsman feature wasn’t quite as dominant as Haers’ performance, the results were the same for the second-generation chauffeur from Seneca Falls. And although Saturday’s win was the second of his Sportsman career at Canandaigua, Guererri is a veteran at the fairgrounds, in his sophomore season at LOLR in 2004 capturing his first victory in the full-fender Pro Stock ranks.
“Didn’t know if I’d ever get back here,” stated a recovering Guererri, 35, who logged his only other Sportsman win in 2015, and didn’t even have his doctor’s clearance to race on Saturday. His appendix suddenly burst —on his wife Stephanie’s birthday no less— and emergency surgery that followed in mid-July required two days in the hospital. “Didn’t really touch the car too much over the past few weeks so I can’t thank enough everybody that’s helped out in the shop.”
“When I was out for a couple weeks I sat up there and watched, actually learned a couple things that I was doing wrong. So I tried to apply them and it paid off. Was entering the corners too straight, too slow, so I practiced those things in the heat (won) and they worked good. After the heat all I did was put fuel in the car, didn’t make any changes, and it was a rocket,” noted Guererri, the second cousin of new WoF inductee Paul Guererri, and son of Frank Sr. who also won a handful of Pro Stock features at Canandaigua in the 1990s.
On this night it was all Frankie Jr., however, as he out-dueled Tim Lafler from the outset before holding off WNY wheelman Zachary George for the elusive win by 0.241-sec. at the line. Guererri’s frolic up front was slowed just once when Andrew Jacobson spun between turns 1-2, collecting LOLR rookie Justin McKay before Kennedy Payne joined in to ram the uke tire stationed low in turn two.
At the halfway mark a parade of twos navigated around the track, front running Guererri and George followed by Zach Sobotka and Zach Payne then Paul Guererri and his nephew, the current points leader and defending champ Matt Guererri. And that order remained intact the rest of the way although George made it close at the end with traffic sending racers high and low hoping to advance.
And when the checkered flag flew for the finish, it was the 113jr. Fuccillo Ford/Seneca Falls-Precision Automotive & Fabrication/Bicknell car showing the way. The only requirement appeared to be in name only… first Zach and Guererri last, to make up the front top-6 positions on the final scoresheet.
“Wasn’t expecting to have the start I got,” added Guererri, the eighth different winner in 11 Sportsman events run this season. “Knew once I cleared the #51 (Lafler) I’d better get to the bottom and be patient, run my line and run my own race. Could hear somebody right on me, just slowed down my entry (into turns) and made sure I hit my marks so I could motor up off. And to be honest I didn’t know the race was over until I came out of turn four and they were yelling checkers. Thought I got the white but in the end I found out slow was fast.”
With qualifying heats run last weekend before rain forced postponement of the Street Stock feature, Pangrazio returned with a vengeance for the 20-lap full-fender finale. Starting 11th in the 18-car line-up, the ‘Honky Tonk Express’ needed just three laps to bolt into a lead he would never relinquish en route to the lopsided victory.
“This car can definitely be better, tight getting into the corners tonight, we can tweak on it a little bit,” figured Pangrazio, the reigning 2020 LOLR division points king, now with three wins in five starts this season steering the potent blue no. 7 Skyline RV Sales&Service-Houseman Refrigeration-Cummings Trucking Ford Mustang at the fairgrounds. “Just keep digging hard, getting into the right place at the right time to give us chances.”
Fat chance at that, especially for the competition after the Oakfield outlaw notched his 13th career win at Canandaigua, his latest by a mountainous quarter-mile over runner-up Marc Minutolo. Three caution periods during the first half of the race seemed only to delay the inevitable as the margin ballooned to nearly 10-sec. as the final 11 circuits were run without a hitch.
Pole-sitter Parker Smith paced the field early before his front row running mate Pat Hobbs spun out of turn one as the unrushing pack swerved everywhere but into his #3 Mountain Dew-Terrell’s Potato Chips Chevrolet Camaro with two laps scored. The ensuing lap three restart was all Pangrazio needed as he ran the high side unscathed and stormed from sixth to first before the opposition could blink.
In the latter stages of the race points leader Jimmy Grant moved in from 10th to challenge Minutolo for runner-up laurels yet settled for third ahead of 12th-place starter Brad Steinruck Jr. while Rick Crego rounded out the Top-5. The hardest hit of the night involved Chris Beyea and Bob Buono as the pair crashed each other on the post-race cool down lap.
A caution-infested Hobby Stock affair fittingly, and finally, came to its conclusion with a combination checkered/yellow flag finish ending the 15-lap marathon. The first five features were slowed a total of eight times while the Hobby harbingers threw caution to the wind on seven occasions.
When the dust finally cleared in the half-hour enduro, it was Eldredge in his oh so familiar #25J Eldredge & Sons Scrap-Big Mike’s Auto Chevrolet Monte Carlo taking a bow after recording his track-best seventh win of the season.
“Good having more cars here and mine has been good all year long,” said Eldredge, with the turnout of 16 still not anything to deter the Waterloo driver from once again displaying his superiority in the entry-level stock car class. “Its good to have Bubba (Burnell) back here, he’s a good driver and he’s got his kid too and they’re really stout. Its good to race with them.”
Brother Jamie Eldredge Jr. jumped out front to lead lap one but the trouble started on the second circuit when Shawn Lloyd slid high off the track rounding turns one and two to collect Willy Grant. Leader Eldredge was then sent to the rear after track officials deemed him to have jumped consecutive restarts.
Three more yellow flags flew on lap three, the most significant slowdown caused by front-runners Tyler Burnell and Brian Lloyd locking bumpers attempting to get the edge with no success. Just in time for scorers to establish an order, Frank ‘Bubba’ Burnell led lap three ahead of Justin Eldredge and Jeremy Trank while Jamie Eldredge was all the way back to fourth although maybe a half tank of fuel lighter.
Action remained intense as Eldredge banged Bubba from behind when the leader chopped down low in turn three attempting to avoid a lap six pass. Yet that maneuver only stoked the fire as Eldredge blazed by higher up the following circuit, running uncontested the rest of the way despite three more slowdowns impeding his progress.
At the wire it was Eldredge by a clean 10 car-lengths followed by ’20 Hobby titlist Tyler Burnell, his father Bubba, Trank and Grant.
“I felt Bubba on the restarts, every time he kept giving me a little shot in the back so I figured he’d be there the whole race,” added Eldredge, hinting at a move up into the Street Stock division next year while keeping a car entered in the Hobby class. “That’s full-fender racing for sure.”
