Jonathan Brown Nabs North-South Shootout Spot
Brown, John Holleman IV, and Burt Myers Claim NSS Bonus Cash
(Sophia, NC): Jonathan Brown became the second Modified driver to lock in a starting spot for the 19th Annual, “John Blewett Memorial North-South Shootout in Memory of Charles Kepley” Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium.
Brown earned the number one starting position with the fastest lap of the season for the Modifieds edging John Holleman, IV for the top spot. Brown and Holleman traded the lead and some paint a few times before Brown prevailed.
Just a bit of irony for the history buffs, the car Jonathan Brown drove to the win Saturday night at the qualifier for the “John Blewett Memorial North-South Shootout in Memory of Charles Kepley” was purchased from John Blewett’s brother, Jimmy, in 2019 and still carries the familiar red, white and blue paint scheme made famous in Modified racing circles by the Blewett Family.
Holleman, Brown and Burt Myers split $500.00 from the NSS promoter for being in the top three spots at lap 76 of the 150 lapper. The number 76 was John Blewett’s car number. Holleman earned $250.00 while Brown won $150.00 and Myers $100.00.
There are eight qualifiers for the NSS this season with four in the south and four in the north.
Brown’s win is the first for southern cars with the next coming September 11th at Caraway Speedway when the SMART Modifieds return for a “9/11 Night of Remembrance” 99 lapper. Other qualifiers for the south include SMART Modified Tour events at Dominion Raceway on August 18th and Motor Mile Speedway on October 2nd.
“Money Matt” Hirschman locked in the first spot for the north with his win in the “SBM 125” Tri-Track Series event at Star Speedway in late July. The next qualifier for the north is the 71st Race of Champions on August 26th at Lake Erie Speedway in North East, PA followed by the “King of the Green” at Evergreen Raceway on October 15th. Evergreen Raceway is in Drums, PA. The “Haunted Hundred Modified” at Seekonk Speedway on October 23rd wraps up the qualifiers for the north. Seekonk Speedway is in Seekonk, MA.
