Record Night for Rhode Island Italian-American Hall of Fame; Mario Andretti Honored
E. Greenwich, RI — It was a record night for the Rhode Island Italian-American Hall of Fame on Friday. The annual event awarded a record $30,000 in scholarships to students.
The marquee outside the Greenwich Odeum called it “An Evening with Mario Andretti”. He was given the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Previously, Andretti was honored in 1995 as Man of the Year. Andretti is one of the world’s transcendent athletes. He is the only driver to win the biggest events in NASCAR (Daytona 500), IndyCar (Indianapolis 500), and the Formula 1 championship.
Joe Rocco, the president of the organization, spoke with Andretti about his extensive career. Andretti reminisced about Daytona, Indianapolis, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and IndyCar. He gave some thoughtful insights into his success.
Governor Daniel McKee (D-RI) spoke to recognize Andretti’s visit and Rocco’s efforts since 1987.
Guinness world record holder Cory Pesaturo of Cumberland, RI played the Italian national anthem on his accordion to close the program.
Gene Valicenti of NBC 10 and WPRO was the Master of Ceremonies.
Former inductees include major figures from politics and sports: Providence College basketball great Ernie DiGregorio, Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino, LA Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, and former United States Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.
The event was supported by Stifel, Audrain Motorsport, Integlia, Procaccianti Companies, Providence Auto Body, Tasca Automotive Group, MG Commercial, Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses, and DiPrete Engineering.
