SMART Modified Tour Returns to Caraway Speedway
High Point, NC’s Bobby Labonte Heads Modified Entries; Atlantic Turfscapes Super Trucks Series Visits for the First Time; Challengers, 602 Modifieds, Ucar’s and Mini Stock Extravaganza Highlight Local Division Action
Caraway Speedway has been the “home track” for the Southern Modifieds for over thirty years with the original S.M.A.R.T. Tour and now the new SMART Modified Tower “Powered by Pace-O-Matic.” The series features the open-wheel, 600 horsepower Modifieds, and some of the area’s best Modified teams.
High Point, NC’s Bobby Labonte is a former Caraway Speedway Late Model Champion and NACAR Cup Series Champion. Labonte headlines the entry list for the ” Warrior 99” for the tour Modifieds Saturday night. Labonte will do battle with 2021 SMART Champion, Burt Myers. That twosome will try to move Matt Hirschman out of the Pace-O-Matic winner’s circle. Hirschman is two-for-two this season in SMART events claiming wins at Florence Motor Speedway and Southern National Speedway this spring.
Others expected on the Caraway entry list include Bobby Loftin, two-time southern Modified Champion, Jeremy Gerstner, Jonathan “John Boy” Brown, Jason Myers, Gary Young, Jr., Kevin Orlando, Bobby Measmer, Jr., Caleb Heady, and many more. The SMART Modified Tour has averaged over 24 cars per event this spring and Caraway should be right there with the car counts for the “Warrior 99” lap feature
The Atlantic Turfscapes “Super Trucks” makes their first of four events this season at Caraway Speedway. Strom Altman picked up the win in the season opener at Florence Motor speedway edging Cody Kelly for the win in a strong field of eighteen “Super Trucks.” Many of those drivers as well as some locals are expected Saturday night for a 50 lapper.
Also on tap are events for the speedway’s local divisions. If opening day last Sunday is any indication of the action those locals bring to the track, area fans are in for a great night of racing from the Challengers, 602 Modifieds, UCAR’s and Mini Stocks.
Enoch McNeil edged Toby Layne and Jacob Brooks in the season opener. Seventeen cars took the green flag Sunday afternoon and many of those teams are expected to be on hand Saturday night.
The 602 Modified feature Sunday saw Josh Lowder visit Victory Lane over a field of 11 Mods and a strong field is expected for this week’s 30 lapper.
Seventeen UCAR’s took the green flag Sunday and Josh Phillips prevailed over Daniel Hughes for the win. Another strong field of UCAR’s is expected this week to do battle in heat races and a 15-lap feature.
The Mini Stocks go at it in a 40-lap feature with a $500.00 winner’s purse. This is the first of four events in a series within a season. The “Mini Stock Extravaganza” will see four special distance events beginning Saturday night and continuing n July 2, September 10 and November 27.
