Delaware’s Richest Modified Race: $12,000-to-win Gary Simpson Memorial this Friday
GEORGETOWN, DE – Delaware’s richest Modified race.
The J.W. Brown Logging big-block/small-block Modifieds of Georgetown Speedway take center stage on Friday, July 22 for the highest paying Modified race in the history of the First State.
The Blue Hen Construction ‘Gary Simpson Memorial’ race pays the winner of the 32-lap affair $12,000 in honor of Gary’s long-time No. 12k race car. Simpson was a Delaware resident who helped the growth of Georgetown Speedway prior to his passing in October of 2021.
The race pays $1,000 to finish tenth and $400 to take the green in the inaugural memorial race. A total purse of over $36,000 is up for grabs at the Sussex County half-mile oval.
The total pay structure is as follows: 1. $12,000; 2. $5,000; 3. $3,000; 4. $2,000; 5. $1,500; 6. $1,150; 7. $1,100; 8. $1,050; 9. $1,025; 10. $1,000; 11. $750; 12. $700; 13. $650; 14. $600; 15. $550; 16. $500; 17. $450; 18. $425; 19-24. $400; Provisional -$200.
Additionally, a long list of bonus and special awards are up for grabs (see complete list below).
Milford, Del.’s Jordan Watson has won each of the first two J.W. Brown Logging Modified feature events this season. Watson’s pair of wins have him atop the standings in pursuit of the $2,500 Sunoco Race Fuels Championship for the Modifieds.
The Blue Hen Dispose-All Crate 602 Sportsman join the Modifieds, running their second event of the season on the progressively banked half-mile.
The 22-lap race pays $1,212 to the winner, with a total purse of $5,792 on the line for the Crate 602 Sportsman. The race serves as the second round of their $750 Sunoco Race Fuels Championship chase.
The Southern Delaware Vintage Stock Car Club, Little Lincolns, Delaware Super Trucks, and Delmarva Chargers complete the program with 12-lap, features-only affairs.
A pre-event fundraiser for PanCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network) will take place, as well.
For the July 22 event, pit gates open at 4 p.m. with grandstand gates following at 5 p.m. Hot laps are slated to begin at 6:45 p.m. with racing set for 7:30 p.m.
Grandstand admission is $22 for Adults and $18 for Seniors (ages 65 & up) and Students (ages 13-17). Kids (ages 9-12) admission is $10 and Children 8 & under get in FREE.
Pit admission is $35 (ages 13 & up). Kids (ages 6-12) pit admission is $10 and $2 for Children ages 5 & under.
The night of racing – and every Georgetown Speedway race in the 2022 season – will air live and on-demand on FloRacing (www.floracing.tv).
Georgetown Speedway, originally constructed by Melvin L. Joseph in 1949, is located at the intersection of Route 113 and Speedway Road in Georgetown, Del., just miles from the Delaware beaches and less than a 40-minute drive from Ocean City, Md.
