Local Stars Wow Capacity White Mountain Crowd on Milton CAT 250 Saturday
N. Woodstock, NH — The 5th Annual Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250 certainly lived up the hype yet again with $10,000 on the line bringing in 43 American-Canadian Tour teams from across New England and Quebec, Canada. Not to be outdone, the local stars of White Mountain Motorsports Park gave the near-capacity crowd a taste of what weekly racing looks like each and every week in North Woodstock.
It took three rounds of qualifying to whittle down the forty-three-car American-Canadian Tour roster to just thirty starting positions. Alongside the Northeast touring stars were plenty of local powerhouse teams. Multi-time ‘King of the Mountain’ Quinny Welch led the local contingent that also included defending champion Jeff Marshall, top runners Alby Ovitt, Jesse Switser, and Kasey Beattie along with both Rookie of the Year contenders Ryan Ware and Bryan Wall, Jr. Welch would earn the highest starting position, outside pole sitter, and former White Mountain champion D.J. Shaw with Switser, Ware and Wall joining him. Marshall narrowly missed earning the White Mountain provisional in the B-Feature while Beattie faced a blown motor in practice with a replacement unable to fit in the 45NH machine.
Throughout the 250-lap American-Canadian Tour race, both Welch and Switser proved experience pays off, staying well into contention with consistent top-10 position throughout the entire event. In the end, 2006 White Mountain Motorsports Park champion D.J. Shaw took down the 5th Annual Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250 followed by current #4 Foley Oil & Propane Late Model point man Jesse Switser.
Wall’s Ford Platinum Series point leader Derek Gluchacki finished 6th, followed by current White Mountain point leader Quinny Welch who took 7th. Rookie of the Year point leader Ryan Ware earned 19th with competitor Bryan Wall Jr. taking 21st, both in their first ever American-Canadian Tour starts. Alby Ovitt claimed 25th and Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tiger standout Tanner Woodard took 29th, both bowing out with handling issues.
In Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tiger competition, the action started early with Rookies Thomas Smithers IV and Kaiden Fisher driving hard to earn the heat race wins. The first caution came out on Lap 3 to complete an off day for Rookie Chandler Potter with his spin in turn three. On the restart, Smithers took a chance from the 3rd spot, jumping under Matt Potter going into turn one, stacking up the field coming out of turn two onto the backstretch. Cooper French went up and over the hood of Matt Potter with Kaiden Fisher piling in as well.
Following the clean-up came a 31-lap green flag dash to the finish. Waterbury Center’s Kyle Streeter led the field for 20-laps before Shane Sicard caught up to the bumper of the 37VT machine with ten-to-go. Sicard moved underneath Streeter to take the lead leaving Streeter to battle Kaiden Fisher for second. Across the line, Shane Sicard took down his sixth win of the season followed by Fisher in second and Streeter taking third.
The Ammonoosuc Asphalt Mini Late Models returned to White Mountain for their third event of the season with Brian Putney and Tim Paquette earning heat race wins. Paquette’s success was short-lived. Coming through turn three for lap three, Paquette went into the spin cycle with a late hit from Desmond Skillings slamming into his left rear and ending his day mechanically. The final 37-circuits went green to checkered with Nick Anderson coming from the end of the field to take his second win of the season. Brian Putney took second followed by Ken Marier for third.
The Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis went non-stop, green to checkered for the second time this season in their 25-lap feature event. An excited Les Washburn stole away his first win of the season followed by a hard-charging Donnie Baumgardner and Jack Hayes. Similarly, the Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Division drove a fast and furious flag to flag 15-lap feature that saw Kyle Goodbout take his second win of the season over McKenna Merchant and Walker Fitch.
Up next at White Mountain Motorsports Park is the Wayne’s Market Dwarf Car Special on Saturday, July 6th. The Wanye’s Market Dwarf Cars headline the evening program with their annual 50-lap special event along with the Foley Oil & Propane Late Models, Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tigers, Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis and Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Division. Post Time is set for 6:00pm with full race day schedule to be released in the near future.
