Bill Greco Passes Away

Sylvester “Wild Bill” Greco
1929 – 2023

Sylvester “Wild Bill” Greco, age 93, of Stratford (formerly of West Haven), passed away peacefully on Friday, May 5, 2023 at Bridgeport Hospital with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband to the late Marilyn Klapproth Greco. Born in New Haven on June 11, 1929, he was a son of the late Frank and Mary (Migliacci) Greco and was a longtime resident of Stratford.

Bill was known as “Wild Bill Greco”, a legend in the open wheel modified racing world. Wild Bill began his racing career in the late 1940’s at the old Savin Rock Speedway in West Haven. He was inducted into 4 motorsports Hall of Fames. Over his career “Wild Bill” collected more than 300 feature victories and multiple championships at the Savin Rock Speedway in West Haven in 55, 56 & 58, Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N.Y. in 65 and at the old Riverside Park Speedway in Agawam, MA. in 65 & 67, in addition to his many other victories throughout New England. He may have been known as #43 in the racing community but to his family he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his loving children, Judy Celone (Gene), William Greco (Diane), Michael Greco (Kathi), Denise Greco, Marlene Greco and Angelo “AJ” Greco (Darlene), a sister, Ann DeFilippo, 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Frank, his brothers, Pasquale “Pat”, John, Anthony, Edward, George, and Frank, and his sisters, Florence Forte and Marie Katsimperes.

A Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Shelton. Friends may call on Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
