Impending Weather Shifts Wmt Buzz Chew Chevrolet 200 to Sunday Afternoon at Riverhead Raceway
Riverhead, NY May 18th — Faced with a dire forecast for a 90% chance of rain over Riverhead Raceway Saturday, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour officials and Riverhead Raceway management jointly announced Thursday morning the Buzz Chew Chevrolet 200 would shift to Sunday afternoon May 21st. A more favorable forecast is predicted for Sunday. The race day itinerary has been moved up for the Sunday rain date, with the Buzz Chew Chevrolet 200 taking the track at 2:45 pm.
Jimmy Wilson of NASCAR in conjunction with Connie Partridge & Tom Gatz of Riverhead Raceway wanted to make a decision sooner rather than later with the hope of the advance notice aiding with adjusting travel plans and accommodations. The complete race program set for Saturday transfers to Sunday with the Blunderbusts, INEX Legend Race Cars, Street Stocks and Eddie Partridge Vintage All-Stars complimenting the Buzz Chew Chevrolet 200. Riverhead GM John Ellwood announced the pit gates open at 8:30 am Sunday with a rotating practice for the Riverhead classes from 9:45-11:00 am. Final practice for the WMT runs from 11:15-12 noon. Spectator gates open at 10:00 am.
Heat races for the local divisions starts at 12:15 pm followed by WMT single car qualifying at 1:30. At 2:00 pm opening ceremonies will be presented followed by the Eddie Partridge Vintage All-Star and Blunderbust feature events. At 2:45 pm the Buzz Chew Chevrolet 200 will be presented and upon completion be followed by the Street Stock and INEX Legend Race Car features. “It is the goal of NASCAR, Jimmy Wilson of the WMT and Riverhead Raceway to have the Buzz Chew Chevrolet 200 completed earlier in the day. This gives race teams and fans that have traveled to be with us ample time to get home at a reasonable hour” track GM John Ellwood noted.
The complete itinerary for Sunday can be viewed at www.riverheadraceway.com. General admission for adults is $40, kids 6-12 $20 with 5 & under free. Camping is available in the back parking area adjacent to the pit area and is free of charge, there are no hook-ups.
