Sunday Funday: Utica-Rome Speedway ‘Honoring Alex’ Opener Set for Sunday, April 21
VERNON, NY – Sunday funday, Utica-Rome Speedway style.
The 2024 Season Opener at the Home of Heroes has been rescheduled for Sunday, April 21. Following a stretch of late-week rain and a forecast of afternoon and evening showers for Friday, the BD Motorsports Media LLC speedway management team has opted to utilize the Sunday rain date for the ‘Honoring Alex’ lid-lifter in memory of Alex Friesen.
The event will be held on Sunday, April 21.
“We feel Sunday is the best option to get the season started at Utica-Rome the right way,” promoter Brett Deyo said. “After our practice session Tuesday, rain settled in. Sunday will be a perfect fit. With showers predicted for Friday, we have Saturday to dry out our pit area and spectator parking areas. The track got great reviews Tuesday at practice and Sunday’s weather is ideal for Opening Day.
“Opening on a Sunday (Utica-Rome’s longtime race night prior to a switch to Friday in 2021) brings back fond memories for a lot of people.”
Pit gates open at 1 p.m. Grandstand gates unlock at 2 p.m. Hot laps hit the track at 3:30 p.m., with racing at 4:30 p.m.
“We will have everyone on the road plenty early on Sunday,” Deyo added.
The program will run in its entirety as it was scheduled for Friday night.
