Doug Coby Finally Breaks Into Victory Lane at Riverhead Raceway

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — It took 20 starts, and close to two decades, but Doug Coby finally parked his car in Victory Lane at Riverhead Raceway on Saturday night, May 15. The six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion took the lead from Justin Bonsignore with 25 laps to go in the Miller Lite 200 and drove away from the field to win by over three seconds.

After years of frustration, near victory, and pure determination to succeed, Coby took the entire Mayhew Tools team to the front of the field. The victory was his 30th career in Whelen Modified Tour action — breaking a tie with Bonsignore to give Coby sole possession of sixth place all-time. He is just one victory away from Jeff Fuller.

“Easily the sweetest win of my career,” Coby said. “This is a tough place — especially for outsiders. To put the Mayhew Tools car out front… I know we have to be perfect when we come here to beat these guys. I didn’t want to say it, but I knew this thing was perfect from the beginning. We’re so happy to go back to Connecticut with a win at Riverhead. Finally.”

Coby scored a third-place effort in Mayhew Tools qualifying earlier in the day, ran inside the top-five for the duration of the race, and pounced when it was time to win. The victory jumped Coby to third, just seven points out of the championship lead in the point standings.

Next up for Coby and the Mayhew Tools team will be a trip to Jennerstown Speedway for the Jennerstown Salutes 150, presented by DGV on Saturday, May 29. For more information on Doug Coby Racing, visit the team on Facebook.
