First-Time Big-Block Winner Alex Payne Makes Legendary Canandaigua Run
Hutton & Grant extend streaks, Bristol & Burnell bolster totals, Ventura & Kennedy Payne take wins
Canandaigua, NY – July 15, 2023 – Rebounding from mechanical failure the week prior, rising third-generation star Alex Payne wasted no time finding success Saturday as he rallied to score his first career Pepsi Big-Block Modified feature win at Land Of Legends Raceway on “Fan Appreciation Night” presented by Lake Beverage/Busch Light and A.M.S. Enterprises.
“It’s amazing, what a great race car, what a great race on a great race track,” beamed Payne, now seemingly a seasoned 17 year-old, already taking a Sportsman checkered flag at LOLR in 2021 at age 15. “The fans, thank you, everybody, this is awesome.”
Joining in the ongoing 70th Anniversary season celebration were winners Kane Bristol (Stirling Lubricants Sportsman), Jordan Hutton (MighTea Boba 305 Sprint Car), Jimmy Grant (Eldredge & Sons Scrap Recycling Street Stock), and Frank ‘Bubba’ Burnell Jr. (Lloyd’s Contracting Hobby Stock) as Kennedy Payne and Nick Ventura split double features in the Maguire Ford of Canandaigua New Legends Sportsman entry-level open-wheel division.
While race teams contested trackside, LOLR Promoter Paul Cole faced his own personal battle against the weatherman with a forecast of rain projected to strike the fairgrounds at 10:45pm. Cole promptly adjusted the evening agenda, kicking off the program with the annual ‘Family Autograph’ activity followed quickly by qualifying heats and seven features … all completed before the clock struck 10:30.
Hundreds of fans met up with their favorite drivers alongside their cars parked in the fairgrounds midway outside turn four with gray skies hovering overhead, collecting hero cards and posing for pictures in the meantime. LOLR public address announcer Steve Ovens conducted one-on-one interviews with many of the racers in all classes before qualifiers took the first green flag at 7:25pm.
It was non-stop action for the next three hours with superb track conditions and exemplary driving allowing just six caution periods in 134 laps of feature racing.
Although some speedways provide memorable moments on occasion, they’re becoming weekly routines at the hallowed Ontario Co. Fairgrounds oval as for the third straight show a first-time Big-Block winner found his way into victory lane. And despite putting a $2,000 top prize in his pocket, this outcome for the ages was truly priceless as Payne matched Zach Sobotka and last week’s winner Zach Payne to become the 109th Modified victor in track history.
“I didn’t really know where to be (on track), felt so maneuverable wherever I was,” Payne noted in the packed victory lane bash. “If that wasn’t fun to watch I don’t know what is. Think we kept it clean, the left-front flat wasn’t helping me. Think I clipped the inside wall on like lap seven. We’ve worked so hard to be here, it just doesn’t feel real.”
While leader Payne suffered an exploded piston in his black Billy The Kid-powered no. 70A Nardozzi Paving & Construction-Batzel’s Auto-Emerson Oil-Bilstein Shocks-Speed Connection/Bicknell mount with only six laps left last weekend, this time around his charge to the front culminated with a blast to the front just five from the end in the breath-taking 30-lap Big-Block finale. The flat tire was never a factor.
And the Hopewell hotshoe had only 10 minutes to get the job done as the 15-mile main ran off non-stop with Payne filing in fifth on the 19-car starting grid.
Division rookie Dalton Martin out-dueled front row partner Daniel Johnson Jr. to begin the caution-free affair before Johnson moved to the point on lap three. The father/son duo paced the 19-car field after Danny Johnson grabbed second from Kevin Root halfway through followed by Payne, 10th-starting Peter Britten, and points leader Justin Haers.
Traffic jumbled the leaders as laps clicked off in rapid fashion, keeping scorers as well as drivers and their fans reeling the entire way. Remaining solid in his run to the front, in a sudden burst of power Payne bolted from third to first past both Johnsons on lap 26 to take the top spot. And mirroring what amounted to the winning move, Britten blasted from fourth to second on lap 27 yet came up just two car-lengths shy of his third win in ’23.
“Don’t know if we touched a little bit but (Johnsons) both ran a great race, congrats to everybody,” said a choked-up Payne, dedicating the win to close family friend Bob Frost who lost his life in a motorcycle accident earlier in the week. “This is the first time I didn’t look at the (leader) board, I just raced.”
“At one point I didn’t know who the leader was, saw I was catching some cars and I looked up and Daniel and Danny were there. Then I saw the board and figured we were in good position, just rolled the inside and the car just generated enough speed wherever I put it. Was just amazing,” pointed out Payne, who was chased across the line by Britten, Root, Haers, and Daniel Johnson in his first top-five tally of the season.
The customary post-race roof dance by the talented teen wasn’t the first for the Payne family on this night however as before Alex cracked the winner’s circle, sister Kennedy had added her fourth Legends Sportsman victory of the year.
“I think this is what I really wanted with us to win on the same night,” said Payne, 16, in the final interview of the night. “Don’t know if it’s been done before with siblings, only know I was probably more excited with Alex winning than myself.”
Experiencing just his second start, second-generation wheelman Ventura seemed destined to take the checkered flag in the first 12-lap event. Ducking too low rounding turn one with four to go, his car caught the uke tire and the resulting broken front-end sidelined him for the remainder. Payne inherited the lead for the lap eight restart and her #31K SVN Realty Performance-Deck Tech-Speed Connection/Troyer entry cruised home for an easy half-straightaway victory.
“Everybody knows that first week out here I smashed right through that uke tire,” recalled Payne, after out-distancing fellow female foe Angel Sperring in the six-mile stint. “That’s why we’re out here, it’s all part of learning. Tonight it worked to my advantage in the end, hugging the bottom, staying out of trouble, and keeping calm.”
After making quick repairs to his #711 MP Delivery-Quick Time Shocks/Bicknell entry in time for the inverted round two start, Ventura grabbed the lead on lap four from Belle Hogan in her first-ever LOLR appearance and from there the Ontario pilot went on to score his first Legends win by 10 car-lengths over Payne.
“After the start we had didn’t think we’d ever make it here,” figured Nick, 20, son of former Canandaigua contender John Ventura, with his son making the lone Legends appearance last August steering Kane Bristol’s car to a fifth-place finish. “Have to thank my dad, he’s the reason we’re all here … and my grandfather, he actually bought the car last November. He passed away and never got to see me make a lap but hope he’s proud right now. A lot of people to thank, especially Mike Payne, he’s given us a billion parts the last couple weeks.”
While Bristol’s #31 Flower City Glass-Schuler Haas Electric-Lynnie Lou’s Ice Cream/Bicknell ride afforded Ventura his first taste covering Canandaigua’s clay last summer, it was stout enough Saturday night to carry the smooth Farmington driver to his first Sportsman win in over a year.
“It helps when you start up front because of bad luck every week,” remarked Bristol, now 38, after posting his 10th career win in Canandaigua. “Would rather be fighting for the championship and be back there mid-pack running up through but we’ll take it. It’s a super tough field of cars and any chance you can start up front, go green to checkers, and have a good car is great.”
Bristol blasted from fourth to first on the opening circuit and matching the Modifieds in a caution-free feature, led the distance to score victory in decisive fashion. The finishing order of Justin Henderson, Tim Lafler, and Zach Sobotka remained intact most of the way with Karl Comfort crossing the line fifth in the 25-lap race. The Guererri clan —Frank Jr., Matt, and Paul— came next, with two-time champion Matt Guererri leading reigning points king Sobotka, 467-463, heading down the stretch.
“A couple of them lapped cars were kinda using the whole track so it was tough to plan through that,” added Bristol, who ranks sixth in the current point standings. “Luckily I got through it, knew I slowed up but didn’t know how close anybody was. Trying to check out the big screen on the way by to kinda get an idea there but the mindset was don’t hit one of the lapped cars, don’t hit one of those (uke) tires, and keep consistent laps going.”
“Have to thank my father, been here with me since the beginning, and wouldn’t be doing this without him. Along with my family and everybody that helps out, also have to thank Mike and Zach Payne for all the tips they continue to give come race day.”
Logging the fewest laps of any wingmen on Saturday, the lack of track time did little to faze Hutton as he won his fourth 305 A-Main in six starts to put him further ahead in a bid for his first Land of Legends points crown.
“Going back home, got a 50-foot water slide waiting and I think I’m gonna go down it, should be fun,” declared Hutton, following his last to first fury that caught near race-long leader Steve Glover with one to go in the 20-lap thriller. Missing practice and qualifying events due to his own graduation gala in Hannibal, Hutton arrived just in time to file in 14th on the starting grid.
Still in search of his first career 305 win at LOLR, veteran Glover diced with John Smith and sprint rookie Adam DePuy while Hutton was nowhere to found in the early stages. Yellow flags flew for Matt Rotz (lap 7) and Dillon Paddock (lap 12), with three-wide action among the front-runners witnessed on both ensuing restarts.
DePuy dropped out unexpectedly after the second slowdown, with the leaderboard showing Hutton among the top-five for the first time with a dozen complete. Blake Warner scraped the homestretch retaining wall to incur the final caution on lap 16 and set up a frantic finish that no one imagined.
Back under green, open-wheel upstart Ethan Gray stole the lead from Glover but the “Seabreeze Bandit” was quick to retaliate the next time around. Hutton was just as hungry, on lap 17 blasting by Gray in his black no. 66 Tom’s Auto-Big Awesome BBQ-JB Farms & Logging Eagle entry and setting his sights on Glover’s gold #121 Mach 1 machine with a self-built powerplant under the hood. In a sudden surge exiting turn four, Hutton swept around Glover to end lap 19 and over the final half-mile forged a five-car-length margin under Scott Hixson’s flailing checkered flag.
“Honestly, can’t believe we made that (pass) work, no idea what to expect going into turn one. Sorry that I screwed up with the schedule for my grad party, always love signing autographs for the fans before the races. Can’t believe I made it out here, just trying to keep up the points lead. Won at (Utica-Rome) last night so made a clean sweep this weekend. Didn’t expect this at all but we’re here in victory lane and its been awesome lately.”
Glover settled for his first top-5 finish of the season followed by Gray, Smith, James Layton, and last week’s winner Johnny Kolosek.
The four fairgrounds wins in 2023 for Hutton is an otherwise sensational season. When it comes to Street Stock competition in Ontario County, however, Grant has shown the most superiority, collecting his fourth consecutive checkered flag to total six wins in eight starts and further distance himself from weekly rivals C.J. Guererri and Mike Welch in the points chase.
“It’s awesome, yet if it wasn’t for that caution I don’t think I would’ve run down Mike, but that ‘s racing,” commented Grant, the ’21 LOLR track champion after adding career win number 18 since 2019. “It was a lot of fun driving in on top of him, knew he was gonna hug the bottom, he’s really good down there. That was my only shot so I took it and it worked out for us.”
Rick Crego out-dragged pole-sitter Pat Hobbs to lead early in the 20-lap feature with Grant lined up ninth. All-time LOLR stock car winner Welch slid under Crego down the back straightaway on lap eight with the ’22 points champ looking for his first win of the season. Meanwhile, Grant improved to fourth by lap five and the Penn Yan pilot took third from Marc Minutolo on lap seven before rocketing into the runner-up slot past Crego with 12 complete.
Despite a dozen car-lengths between the top-two with five to go, Grant was quickly closing the gap buckled in behind the wheel of his black no. 36 Fratto Curbing-Washburn Excavating Chevrolet Camaro. And when hard-luck Hobbs suffered a flat tire entering turn four to force out a yellow flag on lap 16, any advantage was instantly erased as Grant closed in tight for the restart.
Charging high through turns three and four, Grant only needed one more time around under green, emerging as the new leader on lap 17 before opening up a comfortable 12-car-length difference under the checkers. Welch salvaged second ahead of Crego, Guererri, and Aksel Jensen in the final rundown.
In the lead-off 15-lap Hobby Stock feature, Burnell led all but one circuit to hold back veteran Nate Peckham for his third win of the ’23 campaign and tie Marc Minutolo atop the points chart through mid-July.
“Just gotta be consistent,” stated Burnell, after the Waterloo warrior registered career win number 34 at his Saturday night hangout. “All I wanna do is finish races. Don’t care if its first or fifth, finish races and not have to put a lot of work and money into the car. It’ll work itself out in the end. Points are points, never really cared. Just wanna win races, if (title) happens, it happens.”
Burnell charged from fourth to first on the initial circuit aboard his potent no. 57B FLX Home Solutions-Scott French Home Improvement Chevrolet Taurus, flanked by Blane Smith, hoodless Peckham, Minutolo, and Justin Eldredge driving his brother Jamie’s no. 17jr. Chevy Monte Carlo after a heat race crash sidelined his own #25J.
Already a two-time winner this season, Daniel Kerrick suffered a flat tire to bring out caution on lap five with Peckham shadowing Burnell on the restart. Peckham stayed steady running low, briefly edging Burnell by a yard across the line on lap seven to provide a wake-up call.
Burnell was quick to respond with a slide job rounding turns one and two on lap seven, switching to the low lane the final half of the race to withstand constant pressure from the runner-up. Peckham tried lap after lap to run down the leader on the outside yet faded five car-lengths back at the end.
Tyler Burnell regrouped to place third ahead of Smith and Eldredge with Minutolo finishing sixth to fall into a tie at 490 points with Bubba Burnell through eight events.
WILD WEDNESDAY WRANGLE
Open-wheel teams only get a few days off before returning to LOLR in the big mid-week doubleheader featuring extended events for Pepsi Big-Block Modified and Sportsman tour stars. The Super DIRTcar Series returns Wed. July 19 when Big-Block Modifieds compete in the 70th Anniversary “Stars & Stripes 70” worth $7,500 to the winner. DIRTcar Sportsman contend in their own Central/West Region Series shootout with $1,000 awarded to the 30-lap feature winner. Honeoye Auto Parts headlines the big DIRTcar doubleheader expected to attract top travelers from both sides of the border.
Pit gates unlock Wednesday at 4 p.m., grandstand seating opens at 5 o’clock and practice sessions including Sportsman timed hot laps start at 6:00. Big-Block group time trials go off the line at 6:30 then opening ceremonies at 7:00 followed by qualifying races for both divisions.

The summer season at the speedway just got hotter as the A-Verdi Storage Containers CRSA Sprint Car Series powered by SuperGen Products returns to Canandaigua in a July 22 special (postponed due to rain on July 3) presented by Seneca Meadows and Auction Direct. Topping both the CRSA and LOLR points charts through the middle of the month, Jordan Hutton looks to match his tour triumph taken at the fairgrounds on May 13 over Dalton Herrick, Thomas Radivoy, Bobby Parrow, and Kyle Pierce.
Along with the MighTea Boba 305 Sprint Cars in round #2 of the DisBatch Brewing Company Challenge mini-series, a full five-division display of Big-Block Modified, Sportsman, Street Stock, Hobby Stock plus New Legends Sportsman action highlights the show with AutismUP the weekly 50/50 drawing beneficiary. Pit gates open at 3:30pm, spectators are admitted at 5 o’clock and hot laps start at 5:30 followed by the first qualifier going green at 6:30pm.
‘CANADA JOE’ SET FOR SPECIAL WALL OF FAME SIGNING SESSION
While inclement weather has delayed Vic Coffey’s Land Of Legends Wall of Fame celebration until Aug. 12, fellow Big-Blocker Joe Plazek now emerges as the next honoree during special pre-race ceremonies slated for July 22 at 6:15pm. Fans planning to attend next weekend’s Saturday Spectacular should arrive early as ‘Canada Joe’ will be signing autographs on his custom-made hero card while supplies last during a special meet-n-greet at the Wall of Fame beginning at 5:00.
With Coffey’s enshrinement now pencilled in next month, Plazek joins Charlie Rudolph in Canandaigua’s Class of ’23, marking the fifth year LOLR Promoter Paul Cole has cited individuals that have helped carry on the fairgrounds lasting legacy.
