Champion Crew Chief Profile: Scott Widener
There will be many crew chiefs coming to Charlotte this week to celebrate their team’s accomplishments, but no one will have more reason to celebrate that Scott Widener. Widener, who directed not one, but two championship campaigns for Burt Myers in 2010.
Widener will participate in Saturday night’s NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Awards Gala in Charlotte and he will also celebrate winning the North Carolina state title during Friday night’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Award Banquet at the Crown Ballroom in the Charlotte Convention Center adjacent to the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
Widener has been with Myers for four years. Like Myers, Widener grew up around Bowman Gray Stadium and dreamed of competing at the track since he was a little boy.
“I started working in the pits as soon as I turned 16,” Widener said. “I have been around that track for nearly 25 years now and I am glad Burt and I started working together a few years ago.”
Widener has turned the wrenches for five of Myers’ eight career wins on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.
“We have had some success together and we are blessed to have a great group of guys who work tirelessly to help this team win races,” Widener said.
Although they have won a lot of races and poles, Widener is happier about another aspect of the team.
“What I enjoy most about working with this team is how close we are,” Widener said. “We truly feel like a family and that is something very special when you work as hard and spend as much time together as we do.”
For Widener, he is just happy he gets to do what he loves – winning championships is just icing on the cake.
“We are all so blessed to get to do what we do,” Widener added. “We all have a lot to be thankful for and I just want the crew to know how much I appreciate them.”
