Rain Wins Again, Forces Final Fast Friday Shootout for 2008 Points Champions
Seekonk, MA — Mother Nature dropped raindrops over southern New England Friday night just as teams were unloading for competition, forcing the Fast Friday Series championships to be decided with one final event. With the loss of their second event of the season, the points leaders only have one last shot to hang on.
With the Pure Stocks racing in their most competitive season to date, Scott Cestodio of Swansea is trying to hold off defending champion Bill Chouinard, also from Swansea, who led the point standings for the first half of the season. With a late season surge, and three wins to his credit, Cestodio has ridden a wave of top five finishes to take over the top of the championship standings. With one final event left on the schedule, he currently has a 16 point cushion over Chouinard, who has four wins himself. Tom Blackwell of Taunton is third, 42 points out of the lead, and still has a mathematical chance at the title. He is still looking for that first win. John Robidoux of Swansea is fourth with one win this season, 69 points out, while Bob Hinckley of Acushnet rounds out the top five. Bob picked up his first two wins this season.
The Seekonk Youth Racing Association has a very similar battle at the top of the standings. In the 600 class, Ashburnham’s Jake Spillers leads the charge in the younger group. Jake has sat atop the chase since their opening race in June, when he picked up the win. He has been able to maintain a steady lead over Somerset’s Dave Hutchins. Lil Hutch has been steady over the season, but has yet to visit Victory Lane. He sits only 17 points out of the lead. Kyle DeSouza of Framingham has picked up two wins this season, and sits 41 points out of the lead in third. Kaitlyn Donovan of Waterford CT picked up one win so far, and sits fourth in the standings. She is currently 47 points behind the Spillers, but has a shot at a top three, as she is only six points behind DeSouza. Rounding out the top five is Carl Medeiros Jr of Westport. He has picked up four victories this season, but has been inconsistent, forcing him further down the standings than hoped for.
In the 750 class, Derryk Anderson Jr of Warwick RI leads the standings, and his two wins equals that of several other competitors in this ultra-competitive division. His lead has shrunk a little over the last couple of weeks, but still sits at 22 with one final event remaining. His closest challenger is coming off two straight feature wins. Dylan Estrella of North Attleboro has won the last two weeks out, and has gained some ground over the last couple of weeks. Casey Sanchez of Providence RI started out the season on a high note, picking up the wins in weeks one and two. Since then, he has been shut out of Victory Lane. Over the last couple of weeks, he has started to regain some of that momentum, and has picked up one spot in the chase. Coming into the final event, he sits 36 points out of the lead. Niantic CT’s Kyle Kuchta broke through for his first career win a few weeks ago, but has found misfortune causing him some heartache over the last couple of events. He has slid down to fourth, 47 points out of the lead. Voluntown CT’s Nick Ladyga rounds out the top five in the chase, 65 points out of the hunt. He has one win to his credit this season.
