Pearl, Gallo Take SK Double Features at Waterford
Waterford, CT — Winning twin 25-lap Double-Down Shootout SK Modified features at the Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday evening was Jeff Pearl and Matt Gallo.
Overall event champions were Rob Janovic Jr. (SK Modified), Bruce Thomas Jr. (Late Model), Walt Hovey Jr. (Sportsman), and Randy Churchill Jr. (Mini Stock).
Also claming victory in round-two Double Down features (rescheduled from an earlier date), were Tim Jordan (Late Model), Al Stone III (Sportsman), and Glenn Colvin (Mini Stock). In the accompanying Legends and X-Car main events it was Jason Palmer and Patrick D’Addario Sr. respectively.
Jeff Pearl jumped out to an early lead in the first 25-lap SK event, but was shortly chased closely by Keith Rocco. With eleven laps remaining, Rocco and third-place Dennis Gada tangled, the latter slamming the wall with great force finishing both for the event. Upon resumption, it was Pearl again taking the lead with Doug Coby in hot pursuit. With only a handful of circuits remaining, Ron Yuhas Jr. overtook Coby for second. It was the 30th Speedbowl SK triumph for the former champion.
In the second 25- lap SK feature, it was veteran Pete Pavone taking the lead followed closely by Dan LaJeunesse. A late-race restart shuffled the top-spots, with Tyler Chadwick getting the advantage at the green. Yet another caution set the stage for a 2-lap shootout between young guns Chadwick, Matt Gallo and LaJeunesse. At the finish, Gallo prevailed to win his first-ever SK Modified feature. Following was defending champion Rob Janovic Jr.,
Late Model veteran Phil Rondeau led the opening circuits of the Late Model 25-lapper, before overtaken by 2006 champion Tim Jordan. Defending champion and victor of the first segment, Bruce Thomas Jr. nearly made it a clean-sweep pressuring Jordan to the stripe. Jeff Pearl finished third followed by Keith Rocco, and Joe Curioso III. It was Jordan’s third victory of the season.
Leading the charge in the 15-lap Sportsman event, it was Joe Nogiec followed closely by John Puglisi. Championship leader Al Stone III grabbed the top-spot during the latter stages, narrowly defeating a hard-charging Walt Hovey Jr. Nogiec, Puglisi, and Jack Aquilina completed the top-5.
In the second of twin-15-lappers for the Mini Stocks, it was Glenn Colvin prevailing over a hard-charging Randy Churchill. Several restarts worked Colvin hard for the triumph, Churchill making-up several car-lengths during the waning circuits. Phil Evans, Ken Cassidy Jr., and Danny Field rounded-out the top-5.
Taking the point within a handful of laps, 2008 Wednesday Legends champion won the 20-lap feature, but not before holding-off the determined trio of Michael Gervais Jr., Max Zachem, and Shaun Buffington during a restart with only 2-laps remaining. Completing the top-5 in the caution-plagued affair was Thomas Gray.
Patrick D`Addario Sr. handily moved past recently-crowned 2008 X-Car champion “Bad Brad” Voglesong within 6-circuits, winning the 20-lap X-Car main event by a wide margin over Patrick Williams and Voglesong. Completing the top-5 was John Bowes and Danny Gervais.
