Monadnock Speedway Victories to Stebbins, Johnston, Stebbins, Davis and Lawrence

Dan Stebbins Takes the Monadnock Sportsman Modified Win

Winchester, NH — After his 15th place finish in last week’s opening event, Stebbins took advantage of his outside pole start. It wasn’t all fun and games as pole setter Ken Thompson bogged down at the green flag and Alyssa Rivera climbed over his rear tire, putting Thompson out for the remainder and Alyssa to the rear.

The new restart put Stebbins on the pole and Joe Kendall on the outside. Stebbins would not be dangerously challenged for the lead, but there was all kinds of action behind him. Bill Kimball quickly drove inside Kendall for second and then Keith Carzello made an inside move on Kendall for 3rd.

The first of 3 yellow flags flew on lap 5 for Keith Patnode and Jeremy McCutcheons spin off turn 2. On the restart Stebbins drove away again, but on lap 7 Steve Fifield made his presence be known by slipping by a fading Kendall for 4th. The next lap Kendall lost another spot to Adam Norton, but on lap 12 Norton and Fifield made contact on the front stretch. Norton slid through the infield and pitted with a broken rack and pinion. This restart bunched up the leaders and on lap 13 Carzello powered by Kimball into the 2nd spot. A caution on lap 13 was the result of Russ Hersey, last years’ track champion, and Tyler Jarvenpaa making contact on the front straightaway. The remainder of the race ran caution free. Stebbins and Carzello started pulling away from the pack while on lap 18 Fifields’ mount overheated, forcing him to give up 5th spot to pit.

Brain Chapin, last week’s winner, took over 5th while Stebbins and Carzello staged a bumper to bumper race.

Kimball, Kendall and Chapin ran like they were tied together for the remainder of the race. At the finish it was Stebbins, Carzello, Kimball, Kendall and Chapin for the top 5.

In victory lane Stebbins said, ”We redeemed ourselves after last week’s poor finish,” and a “new motor with less power made the car faster.”

2nd place Carzello said, “I thought I had something for him, but with 10 to go the water light came on. I know my motor man is going to be mad.”

3rd place driver Kimball said, “Each year there’s better competition. We gotta step up and go back to work.”

Bill Johnston Claims Monadnock Super Stock Feature

In a division that is steadily growing the Super Stocks ran their 25 lap feature with Nancy Muni and Tyler Lescord pacing the line up to green. Muni quickly jumped into the lead. A lap 2 yellow flag, one of five for their night, slowed the field. By lap four Lescord overtook Muni for the lead and the next lap #88 Mike LeDoux brought out the 3rd yellow. He was shown the black flag for creating 3 yellows in the first five laps of the feature.

The restart now had Lescord leading, Muni 2nd, Bill Johnston, Ed Brehio III and Ken Springer as the top five. On lap seven Lescord got sideways off of turn 4 made contact with Johnston, with Lescord ending up backwards against the front stretch wall, ending his bid for victory. This scramble of cars brought Johnston to the lead, Brehio III in 2nd, Tom Carey III in 3rd. John Lavoie, your 2012 Champion in 4th, and Craig Smith at 5th. On lap 8 Lavoie demonstrated why he is the defending champion making an inside move on Carey III for 3rd.

After a lap 11 spin by Muni, the restart went single file. At halfway Lavoie got inside Brehio III, raced side by side for a lap, then set his sights on Johnston. With 10 laps to go the 5 lead cars ran bumper to bumper to the finish. At the end it was Johnston with the win, Lavoie coming from 14th to 2nd and Smith from 10th to 3rd, Tom Carey III 4th, Ed Brehio III for 5th.

From Wreckers to Checkers for Mike Stebbins in the Mini Stock Feature

After last week’s hard crash into the turn one wall, #66 Mike Stebbins came back to win his first of the year. Stebbins and #87 Beth Adams who was also involved in the turn one crash from last week, paced the 18 car field to the green flag. Stebbins shot into the lead, a lead he never gave up. While Adams, #43 Adam, Manley and #62 Julia Raymond chased Stebbins, #15 Chris McTaggart; last week’s feature winner, worked his way up from his mid field starting spot. McTaggart caught Raymond and made his move to 4th, then set his sights upon, Manley, and two laps later he slipped into 3rd. With the laps winding down McTaggart caught Adams and powered his way by, but ran out of time to do anything with Stebbins except follow him across the finish line. At the conclusion it was Stebbins, McTaggart and Adams for 1, 2, 3.

In the Young Guns division, #5 Sonja Carey of Swanzey, NH and the #47 Stephanie Macomber of Orange, MA brought the 13 car field to green with Carey taking the lead. A lap 2 yellow, the only one of the night, would tighten up the field giving #62 Christopher Lawrence of Winchester, NH, whom started 4th, a chance to close in on Carey. By lap 6 Lawrence got around Carey and pulled away. By lap 10 the #13 Cameron Sontag worked his way around Carey for second. At the finish it was Lawrence for the win, Sontag 2nd Carey 3rd, last week’s winner #27 Joe Collins of Winchester, NH for 4th and #73 Cole Littlewood of Orange, MA rounding out the top 5.
