Hammar Down in Hermon

HERMON, ME — The eighth event for the Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour took place this past weekend at Speedway 95. The Northern Maine track in the town of Hermon is one of the trickiest tracks to navigate for all the Legends drivers, as it’s another track with the outside groove being the preferred groove. It was the final trip for the Tour in 2013 to the track, and with a few drivers being from the area, there was set to be a great battle for the victory.

The heat races went fairly well and caution free, with Matt Bourgoine taking the win in the first heat after getting by pole sitter and points rival, Ryan Hammar on the start. John Peters took the win in the second heat race after getting by pole sitter Dan Winter.

The feature event rolled out next, with two of the hometown favorites, Wyatt Alexander in the 96 and Matt Bourgoine in the 38 on the front row. On the green flag, Bourgoine got the jump on the 13 year old sophomore, and took the race lead early. Bourgoine had opened up a bit of a lead, and looked to continue his dominance at Speedway 95 until his motor let go with just ten laps to go. This would set up a battle with Ryan Hammar grabbing the race lead after starting from the rear of the field, with his teammate TJ Laro right behind him. That is how they would finish, as Hammar took the win! Laro finished in second with John Peters finishing in third. Alan Smith and Matt Chagnot had great runs as well, rounding out the top five finishers.

With the win and Bourgoine’s misfortunate, the points battle has gotten a lot tighter after the trip up north. Hammar now holds just a ten point advantage over Bourgoine after eight races. The next event for the Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour will be next weekend at Wiscasset Speedway on Saturday, July 6th. For more news, info and how you can get into a Legends Car, visit Nelcar.net.
