UNOH to Sponsor September Truck Race – YankeeRacer.com

UNOH to Sponsor September Truck Race

LOUDON, NH — As part of its marketing platform to promote the world’s first High Performance/Motorsports degree curriculum that takes students from the classroom to the racetrack, the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) signed an agreement today to become the entitlement sponsor of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on September 20.

The UNOH 175, which will drop the green flag at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, will mark the return of the Camping World Truck Series after a two-year hiatus.

The marquee event of three races on Sept. 20, the 175-lap truck feature makes for an electrifying Saturday of racing at the 1.058-mile oval. The UNOH 175 will be followed by the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s F.W. Webb 100 at 3:30 p.m. and the American-Canadian Tour’s Bond Auto Parts ACT Invitational at 5:00 p.m.

“One of the many things I appreciate about the University of Northwestern Ohio is they understand and execute a marketing initiative that encompasses everything from weekly grassroots racing right up to a major national event like the UNOH 175 here at New Hampshire Motor Speedway,” said NHMS Executive Vice President and General Manager Jerry Gappens. “Our facility and event weekend will be a great platform to reach out to a very strong New England market to attract new students for their outstanding program. The value of a strong education in this sport can make all the different in winning a race or even a championship. We’re proud to be affiliated with an educational institution like UNOH.”

This will be the first sponsorship of any kind for UNOH at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, but certainly not the school’s first venture into NASCAR. The private, non-profit institution based out of Lima, Ohio, sponsors Camping World Truck Series races at Bristol Motor Speedway and Kentucky Motor Speedway, as well as last year’s inaugural “Battle at the Beach” at Daytona International Speedway, which continues thru 2016.

“Excitement does not describe our enthusiasm for the sponsorship of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event at NHMS. We have worked over the past two years to try to figure out what we could do to be involved at NHMS,” said Steve Farmer, UNOH’s vice president of corporate development “When they contacted us about sponsoring the truck race, it was a natural fit for UNOH because of our involvement with the series. New England has always been a hotbed of motorsports enthusiasts and we are happy to bring our program to New England area students”.

UNOH’s involvement in motorsports goes far beyond sponsoring races. The university has teamed up with NASCAR to offer the UNOH-NASCAR Youth Achievement Award, which supports NASCAR Home Track licensed drivers from the ages of 14-18 via cash and scholarship awards. The national champion will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship at the NWAAS National Banquet in Charlotte, N.C. in December. They are also a contingency sponsor for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at all 58 NASCAR Home Tracks.

During 2012-13, 10,352 students in New Hampshire enrolled in a high-school level career and technical education program. Schools like UNOH, which offer a racing-focused curriculum in Applied Technologies, help expand those grade level courses into a full-fledged career in motorsports. Industry specific internships are also available to students, while in school so they can take advantage of the hands-on opportunity to work with racing teams and tracks, around the country.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series veteran, Ron Hornaday, Jr., won the inaugural Truck Series race at the Magic Mile in 1996 and was the last to take the checkers before Kyle Busch’s three consecutive wins (’09-’11).
