Drive for 5: Kyle James Seeks Waterford Victories

Ashaway Driver Adds Stafford and Thompson Events

Kyle James of Ashaway, RI will return to his #21 SK Modified® at Waterford Speedbowl full time with a goal on improving on last season. James’ goal for 2014 is “at least five wins.” James finished sixth in points and recorded a career best three wins last season . (I) “had a terrible year with (9 to 10) DNF’s but had a decent year win wise,” James said. He has been a mainstay in the division since moving up from Mini Stocks in 2010.

James will also be competing at Stafford Motor Speedway and Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. James will enter the SK 5K on July 4 at Stafford, “If everything goes smoothly at the bowl around that race,” James said. The $27,000 event pays $5,000 to win. James will also field his SK Modified® for all events at Thompson, except for the Icebreaker.

Crew members are “My Dad, Jeff Heinemann, Bill and Skip Boudreau, Joe Grillo” Team sponsors include Jammin 107.7/99.5 US Country, KettleBottom.com, and Thirty Two Signs. The team held its annual fundraiser, KJR Bowl a Thon, in January. James had a “good turnout” for the event. “Every little bit helps,” James said. “It’s kind of like having another small sponsor.”

The team has a second car that is “about halfway complete.” James’ car may use #65, which his father used in Strictly Stocks in the 1980s. James is looking for additional funding to run the second car in the Tri-Track Open Series races at Lee, Seekonk and Star. Look for James to make his Valenti Modified Racing Series debut this season as well. While James’ car will not be ready for Waterford later this month, his schedule will include Waterford’s summer and fall races, Stafford, and “probably Thompson.”

Waterford Speedbowl opens its 64th season with Budweiser Blastoff Weekend on March 28-30.
