Cane Wins Over Robinson in F1600 at Mid-Ohio
Lexington, OH – Jordan Cane defended a pass attempt from Skylar Robinson on the last lap at Mid-Ohio after a race-long battle to take his first career F1600 Formula F Championship Series win in just his fifth race. The Team Pelfrey driver broke away from the field with K-Hill’s Robinson, sparking a race-long scrap between two Mygale/Hondas that went down to the wire. Scott Andrews finished third to complete the podium.
“It was a hard race, but Skylar and I managed to break away from the pack,” said Cane, of an impressive 18-lap pace at Mid-Ohio. “I think Skylar made a little mistake on the last lap but I managed to snap the win at the end.”
It is the first win of the season for 2014-defending Champion squad Team Pelfrey, who also took their first win of 2014 at Mid-Ohio, leading to a dominating second half of the season.
It was a rare occurrence to see two cars breakaway from the field. In the 11th race of the 2015 season, all events thus had been decided by a larger grouping of cars battling to the end.
For Robinson, it was an improved result on Saturday’s fourth place, and the second straight race with a considerable amount of laps in the lead as Robinson and Cane traded the point back and forth for the majority of the race.
“I think Jordan and I played it smart, working together to pull away,” said Robinson, who started the race on pole after his fast lap in Saturday’s event. “That made it not quite as hectic on the last lap. Going down the back straight I tried the outside deep on the brakes and locked up the rears.”
Andrews could not join the lead group after his win on Saturday, settling for third after finding his way to the front of the second grouping of cars.
“It was a really good race out there, well done to Pelfrey on their first win of the season,” said Andrews. “I was trying really hard to get up there but had my own battle on my hands.”
Robert Megennis and Ben Auriemma completed the top five for Team Pelfrey.
David Grant finished sixth for Polestar, holding off Thomas McGregor, who could not repeat his Saturday podium result. Austin Mack and Steve Bamford followed, with Bamford notching the Masters Class win.
“We started far back, and it didn’t enable us to catch up to the front pack, they were running well,” said Bamford.
Megennis set the fast lap of the race, giving him the pole for race three taking place later on Sunday at Mid-Ohio. He’ll line up next to teammate Auriemma, with Andrews and Robinson on row two.
