FVP National Sprint League News and Notes from Park Jefferson
Windom, MN (July 13, 2015) – It was the first time 410 sprint cars had raced at Park Jefferson International Speedway since 2000, and the packed house enjoyed every minute of it last Friday night! The FVP National Sprint League brought some great action for some great fans. At the end of the night, there would be a new winner in Victory Lane!
“Dynamite” Blast – After the NSL race at Huset’s Speedway on July 3, fans of Mark Dobmeier were left wondering what could have been. Mark got upside down after taking over second place early in the feature. On Friday night, he was fast in the Dash on the cushion, and carried that over to the feature. He took advantage of a restart in getting by Dusty Zomer late in the going to take his first career NSL feature. He celebrated with some donuts in the infield!
A Bad Night to be Austin – It was a bad night to be named Austin. Pleasant Hill, Iowa’s Austin Johnson earned the Bell Helmets “Hard Luck Award” by blowing his newly freshened motor in hot laps. Austin McCarl’s power plant went up in a ball of flames in his heat. Both were done for the night, but look for them to be back at the series next stop in Britt, Iowa on July 21.
Zomer was Zooming – Dusty Zomer shot out with the feature lead from the start after winning the Dash. The Sioux Falls driver led for sixteen laps before the caution flew. That erased a huge lead and gave Dobmeier the opportunity to slide in front of him in turn two. Dusty would hold on for second, where he has finished in two of the last three events. The #82 team seems like the odds on favorite to get a win soon.
720 Degrees – Earlier this season, Terry McCarl spun 360 degrees and kept rolling at 34 Raceway in Burlington for a podium finish. Friday night, it was Danny Lasoski’s turn. “The Dude” made contact with Dobmeier, spinning him around not once, but twice. He stayed on the gas, and maintained his third running position to the checkers. He’ll enter NSL Fair Speedweek with a 383 point advantage over Tim Kaeding, who earned his series high fourth KSE Hard-charger Award, driving from fourteenth to sixth.
LA Dodger Crowd – Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers are known for their late arriving crowds. The same was true at Park Jefferson. At 6:00 p.m., you could have had any seat in the house, but an hour later, fans were streaming in and packing the place. It was good to see on a track that seems to be made for sprint cars.
A Trip Over the Top – Bill Balog looked extremely strong in the Dash, and was vying for a top three finish when he got into turn three a little hot, and got over the berm. That resulted in an eighth place finish. Had he started the feature in the first two rows, he had the car to be a definite contender. As it was, he surged from eighth to fourth. Though the season is not even half over, the Brookfield, Wisconsin driver is embattled with four other drivers (Brian Brown, Ian Madsen, Zomer and Dobmeier) where only 120 points separate fourth from eighth in the standings.
Fuel Overfloweth – Terry McCarl dealt with a fuel leak for 30 laps in the feature. After taking the checkers, he pulled in near the Med-Star Rescue Team to be on the safe side. When he exited he had a shoe full of fuel and a soaked driver’s suit. He would finish eighth.
Another Madsen Top Five – Quietly, Ian Madsen claimed his third straight top five finish. After a bit of a slow start, the St. Mary’s, New South Wales native has climbed to a tie for fourth with Brian Brown in the point standings. With four races from July 21-26 expect a lot of movement in the standings!
FVP National Sprint League “Fair Speedweek” is up next! It will begin at the Hancock County Fair on Tuesday, July 21 at the Hancock County Speedway bullring in Britt, Iowa. On Wednesday, July 22, the series heads to the Iowa State Fair Speedway in Des Moines, and then on to Jackson Speedway in Minnesota and the Jackson County Fair on Thursday, July 23.
