Standing Records Will Fall Wednesday, July 23 With HUGE ‘Crazy 8s Special’ At I-88 Speedway; NDRL Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP Modifieds Race For $8,888 Winner’s Share; B-Main Announced Paying $888 To Win & $100 To Start; Base, One-Night Modified Payout Now $34,832; Fans Entered Into $1,799.98 Whirlpool Washer & Dryer Giveaway
AFTON, NY – Standing records will be demolished when the Sowle Trailer Repair ‘Crazy 8s Special’ presented by Olum’s takes place Wednesday, July 23 at I-88 Speedway.
The richest race ever at the Afton Fairgrounds 3/10ths-mile track will offer a mammoth $8,888 to the winner for 48 laps of big-block/small-block Modified racing. The event, co-promoted by I-88 track managers Jamie Page and Ronnie Ford along with Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LLC is highlighted by the third round of the six-race National Dirt Racing League (NDRL) Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP.
Dig Safely New York GRIT Series Crate 602 Sportsman complete the two-division program with a 25-lap, $1,000-to-win feature paying $100 to take the green flag. There is a rain date of Thursday, July 24 in place for the event.
The NDRL Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP road to the $10,014 championship heads to I-88 following hugely successful events at N.Y.’s Orange County Fair Speedway (April 6) and Thunder Mountain (N.Y.) Speedway (May 20) won by Andy Bachetti and Matt Sheppard, respectively.
Sheffield, Mass., driver Bachetti leads the NDRL Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP point standings with a scant three-point advantage over Danny Johnson (168-165).
The 2014 edition of the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ is the second annual event. Last July, track regular Mike Mahaney of King Ferry, N.Y., held off the advances of superstar Matt Sheppard to earn $8,249 including lap and bonus money. The event drew a capacity crowd to I-88, a neat-and-tidy facility located off I-88 Exit 7, approximately 25 miles north and east of Binghamton.
This July, the ante has been upped by the promotional team. The $6,888 winner’s share has been increased to $8,888 (includes a nominal $20 “Gambler’s Fee” posted) from a massive posted purse of $29,694. With lap money and bonuses, this year’s ‘Crazy 8s Special’ winner could take home more than $10,000!
And there is more. Thanks to marketing support attained from AIM Fitness of Norwich, N.Y., and the Algonkin Motel of Bainbridge, N.Y., there will be a B-Main run for cars unable to make the main event. The 18-lap B-Main will pay $888 to the winner and $100 to take the green flag. That means all drivers signing in for the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ will leave with at least $100.
The total purse for the B-Main is $5,138: close to the weekly Modified total paid out for a regular show in the Southern Tier region. Together with the huge pay structure for the main event, the base purse Modifieds will be competing for at I-88 is $34,832. There will be a number of bonus and contingency sponsors pushing that number to more than $40,000.
The B-Main winner will have the option of taking the $888 payout and heading home or starting from the rear of the feature and relinquishing the cash for the $388 feature green money. The B-Main winner would need to finish 10th in the 48-lap headliner to earn $888, making for a tough Victory Lane decision.
Additionally, the NDRL Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP “Recycle Your Entry Fee” program will be in effect. All drivers that were unable to qualify at Thunder Mountain in May will receive a free car entry at I-88. Paid, full-season NDRL Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP members receive a cash refund of their Thunder Mountain entry fee.
Fans have not been forgotten in the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ promotion. Thanks to event sponsor Olum’s and Whirlpool Appliances, all fans paying to enter the speedway in the grandstand area will automatically be entered into a drawing for a Whirlpool front-loading washer and electric dryer. The MSRP on the giveaway is $1,799.98 and there is no additional cost to be entered into the drawing.
A full schedule of events and pricing will be announced in the coming week.
