Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesdays Return to Speedbowl May 6
Waterford, CT — Waterford Speedbowl’s popular mid-week Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday race program returns May 6, kicking off an 18-week season of family fun and hotly contested racing excitement. The events run weekly, ending September 2. Affordability is at the core of the Wednesday program for both the fans and competitors.
With adult grandstands admission of just $7 and all youth ages 14 and under admitted free, one of the best values for family entertainment returns during the challenging economic times. And don’t forget the Speedbowl’s acres of free parking. “We’ve got one of, if not the best value-priced family night out around” offered track promoter Terry Eames. “And not just in motorsports, but in all facets of entertainment – the movies, a ball game, a day to the beaches – we’ve absolutely got more entertainment for less money”.
Entering into its ninth season, Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesdays have continued to grow in popularity. Last year nearly 200 competitors took to the three-eighths mile shoreline oval during the season. Week in and out, three wide racing and wacky novelty races such as Speedway Bowling, Musical Chairs, Cops and Robbers, and Toll Booth races have been part of the nights fun in the past. With festivities beginning at 7pm, Wednesday’s are structured to allow fans and competitors to work their day jobs, enjoy approximately 2 hours of racing and fun, and be on their way home at a reasonable hour.
The rules for the Wednesday racing divisions – four-cylinder X Cars, eight-cylinder Super X Cars, X-Modifieds, and Legends Cars – offer an economical way for teams getting started in racing, or those that adhere to a stricter budget while still enjoying extremely competitive racing action. “There’s little to no rule changes in effect this year for our Wednesday divisions” states Race Director Tom Fox. “We’re maintaining a low-cost approach to putting these cars together, while at the same time making sure the safety stuff is up to par”. Several competitors have graduated from the Wednesday program into the Saturday night racing wars over the years. In 2009, Steve Barrett, Greg Moran Sr., Greg Moran Jr. and Wayne Arute are the latest to make the transition from Wednesday to Saturday racing.
Guest divisions and a special event will also populate the Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday schedule this year. The entire Wednesday program will invade Saturday night for the first time ever on July 18 while the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program has the night off. The evening is billed as a mid-season championship event with extra distance racing for each division, including a 50-lap National Qualifier for the Legends Cars, an event that historically attracts competitors from across the Northeast and beyond.
The NEATV Truck Series will make two appearances, on June 3 and September 2, with 20-lap events scheduled. Four Women on Wheels (WOW) events are planned with the X-Cars, and three WOW races are scheduled with the Super-X cars, letting the ladies loose on the famed shoreline oval.
Outlaw Stocks, a catch-all division accommodating several combinations of chassis and engine on a treaded tire, will have four dates including the opening May 6, closing September 2, mid-season championship on July 18, as well as June 17. This class gives the opportunity for those competitors with racing equipment from other tracks, or in some cases outdated equipment, the ability to turn laps at the historic Speedbowl. Last year Scott Foster was victorious in the inaugural Outlaw event in a Stafford Late Model, and Corey Hutchings won at the Finale in his Late Model.
