Rowan Pennick Pilots his First True Value Modified Racing Series Win at Waterford

Waterford, CT — Rowan Pennink of Huntington Valley, Penn. drove to his first True Value Modified Racing Series career victory in the 100 lap series portion of the 2nd Annual Wings and Wheels race program at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Pennink passed  Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I. with just 6 laps remaining in the century grind. Stefanik, who had led since lap 52 and was also looking for his first series win, slowed with a blown engine and retired from the race.“I’ve raced here a few times,” said Pennink. “I really like the track it has a lot of grip and we usually run well here. I was hoping we’d have a good night – and we did.”

Pennink led from the drop of the green. He held the top spot until lap 5 when Eddie Dachenhausen took over the point. Pennink eventually slipped to fourth by halfway behind Dachenhausen, Stefanik and Les Hinkley.

Stefanik took over the lead from Dachenhausen on lap 52 and began to put some distance on the second place runner. Pennink worked his way back to second on lap 73 and attempted to wrest the lead from Stefanik on several restarts.

“I was trying to get past him on every restart, said Pennink. “On the last one I saw a puff of smoke so I tried not to get to close in case something happened.”

After Pennink took over the lead Chris Pasteryak of Lisbon, Conn. moved into second and the defending series champion chased Pennink to the checkers.  Kenny Horton of New Haven, Conn. came from the 14th starting position to finish third.

Jon McKennedy unofficially continues to lead the series standings as New England’s premier modified racing series heads to the Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, Mass on Aug. 22.
