Dwayne Dorr – Sportsman Champion
Dwayne Dorr entered the 2007 campaign sure of only one thing, and that was his full confidence in the crew that had made him the defending Sportsman champion.
“My guys, I simply can’t say enough about them,” states Dorr, who now two straight titles. “Honestly, everyone involved with the team was just perfect. After last season, everybody knew their part on race night, and it was such a smooth year from that standpoint. Yeah, I drive the car, but without the help of a dedicated crew, you’ll go nowhere fast.”
A fork lift driver for BDA Inc. in Bradford , RI . Dorr is quick to admit that it’s not getting any easier staying atop one of Waterford ’s most competitive divisions.
“It really was tougher this season,” he continues. “Right from the start, I realized that I was either going slower, or the other drivers were getting a lot faster. Guys like Bill Gerstch, Jim Procaccini, Walt Hovey, and the other front-runners were really flying. You have to work really hard to keep up with them. It’s never easy, but this year the competition seemed to really be more intense.”
The 11-year Speedbowl veteran captured his first win in April, and notched his final in early August for a total of six. .A stellar year was made even better by a couple of additional perks.
“It was obviously a great season for us and some things that happened made it even better. My son Timmy races quarter-midgets and on a coupe of weekends we both won our features. And there was the night that I won, and my brother Randy [Churchill] took the Mini Stock feature. Those were real highlights for me.”
Dorr’s plans for 2008 are at the moment, unconfirmed.
“Timmy is really doing well in the quarter midgets, and my younger son David will be driving next season also. It’s really important to me to be able to spend time with my sons while they’re racing, so I’m not sure what I’ll be doing next season as far as my own stuff goes. It’s still early, and a lot of things could happen, but right now let’s just say that I’m not sure. It’d be great to go after another championship. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
