Strong Start has David Webb Sitting Atop SK Light Modified Championship Standings at Stafford Motor Speedway
With the 2010 season at Stafford Motor Speedway three weeks old, David Webb finds himself leading the SK Light Modified championship standings after posting a win, a second place finish, and an eighth place finish. Webb and his #92 Webb Motorsports / Autopart International team are enjoying their newfound success and they look to continue their good fortunes.
“Everyone is real happy with where we’re at right now but we’re not taking it for granted,” said Webb. “You can be strong one week and then come out and struggle the next week, it’s happened to best drivers and the best teams. You’re only as good as your last race and we are focused on fighting for wins every week, bringing the best car that we can to the track, and performing at a high enough level to be one of the cars to beat every time we race.”
Sitting at the top of the points standings is a new experience for both Webb and his team. Webb struggled through his first two seasons in the SK Light Modified division, finishing 20th in points during his rookie season in 2007 and 27th in the 2008 points standings. But Webb enjoyed a breakout season in 2009 by picking up his first two career feature victories, which helped propel him to a third place finish in the championship.
“We’ve worked really hard on getting our car to handle,” said Webb. “I had a rough rookie season in 2007 and another rough season in 2008, but we made a lot of gains on the car last season and the first three races of this season. We really picked up a lof of speed in the car during the second half of last year and ever since I won my first race last August, the car has been really good every time we’ve come to the track. We did a lot of homework and research on the car and we’ve talked with a lot of people about how to get the car to handle, and our hard work is paying off for us right now.”
Although Webb is in the position that everyone in the paddock area wants to occupy at the top of the championship standings, Webb knows it’s still early in the going.
“It’s way to early for us to think about points,” said Webb. “It feels really good to be up front, but we’re focused on having the car at 110% every week and getting the most out of the car. There’s a lot of strong competition in the SK Light division. We have good drivers, good teams, and there is a lot of knowledge in the paddock area on how to make the cars go fast. Our main goal is to beat the field every week rather than focusing on one or two drivers that we have to beat for points. Right now I just try to pace myself and figure out what I need to do to be a contender for the win at the end of 20 laps. If we can keep on doing that all year long and get some more wins and top-3 finishes, then the points will take care of themselves.”
Perhaps the best example of Webb’s perseverance to get to the front was on display during CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler Weekend. Webb had the dominant car for much of the 20-lap feature, but a missed shift on a late restart cost him several positions, but Webb battled back through the field to nearly win the race.
“I think we should have two wins right now, but driver error cost us the win at the Sizzler,” said Webb. “Although that race was disappointing for me, it was very satisfying to be able to come back through and almost win the race. We needed one more lap or maybe even just one more corner and we could have won. But second was a good finish and we’ll have to wait for next year to try to win the Sizzler.”
After several seasons of struggles, Webb and his team burst onto the scene in 2009 and have continued their good run in the first three races of the 2010 season. As spring gives way to summer, Webb will look to keep his #92 at the front of the field and have the 2010 season blossom into a championship year
