Seekonk Speedway Fans to Adopt Families

Seekonk, MA — The ladies of Seekonk Speedway (drivers, owners, fans, sponsors and employees) are adopting families for the holiday season. Through the Childrens, Friends and Services of RI and the Dept. of Social Services in Mass, twelve families have already been adopted. But the need is great. As of this writing we have the names of five more families needing our help. Families can be adopted individually or as a group. The need for hats and gloves for all ages is great. Boys’ or girls’ from infants to size 14 can use new pajamas, sweatshirts or anything to keep them warm. Spearheading this clothing drive and adoption is Cindy Delicio, who has collected over 600 toys, in the Racers Toy Drive. So now the emphasis is on new warm clothing. You can call Cindy during the day at Kraze’s, The number is 1-800-252-6830 or she’s at home evenings at 1-401-438-5695. She will be happy to give you more details or accept your help. Even with the Speedway closed for the season, the Vendetti family has given Cindy and the other volunteers their blessings as they did for the Toy Drive. This is not a Speedway undertaking, but as always race people are always willing to help a worthy cause, and Cindy is the one willing to put it all together. “Santa now has plenty of toys to distribute; we don’t take money gifts, but we need any type of new, warm clothing for children of all ages. It’s hard for us to believe that in this day and age, even hats and gloves would be a welcome gift,” said Cindy.

The Speedway is in the process of planing their display for the World of Wheels Car Show held in Boston each January. This is a very large show, attended by thousands of people every year. It’s not just a racecar show, but all types of cars and bikes are on display, with all types of merchandise for sale.

Seekonk Speedway’s 54th annual awards banquet is on Saturday night, January 22nd, at the Venus DeMilo Restaurant, on Route 6, Swansea, MA. Cocktail Hour is at 6:30 and Dinner is at 7:30. This is always a very festive evening, with a chance to meet and greet all the race folks you only see in the summer, and catch up on all the news. Tickets are now on sale at the office and over the internet for just $25 per person. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover or cash. If you have a table of 10, or just need a few seats, please call Gail at the speedway office, Monday thru Friday at 1-508-336-9959 so she can accommodate your party.

Seekonk DAV Memorial

Seekonk, MA — The D. A. V. Memorial is now history for the 1999 season. It took two weeks to get it into the record books with a rain delay forcing the cancellation of the race last Sunday. This Sunday Mother Nature allowed us the courtesy of a beautiful day as it should always be when there is a race scheduled.

The Pro Stock 100 lapper was a great race with only minor flaws. The biggest disappointment of the day came when race leader Fred Astle was taken out by a lapped car. Prior to that happening, Fred was leading with his car owner Rick Martin running second while Larry Gelinas ran third. The race was a very exciting one as Gelinas worked Martin over time and again, trying him in the inside, then moving to the outside, back underneath him again and so on lap after lap. The fans went wild as Gelinas would bring the nose of the car under Rick’s door, they would go wheel to wheel and just when you thought that Gelinas had him, Radical Rick would once again bounce back. When the caution came out for Astle it moved his car owner up into the lead with Gelinas starting on the outside. Again, the duo went at it for several laps and with the white flag in the air it Gelinas made his move but he just wasn’t strong enough to hold off the home track ( four time) track Champion Radical Rick Martin. Larry Gelinas had set a new record here at Seekonk in time trials just a week ago when he went 12.337.
