McKennedy Brothers- 1 & 2 at the Hill

Corey McKennedy had a mirror full of heat in his first Saturday night appearance at Sugar Hill Speedway in the Tiger Sprint Division. The young man snatched victory from the jaws of defeat as he rocketed his #29 tiger sprint to the win with two laps remaining.

Kelsey Keegan scooted her #2 tiger sprint machine out in front at the drop of the green. With only one lap completed, the McKennedy Brothers, Jonathan and Corey, had a rope tied to Kelsey’s rear bumper and reeled her in. Jon made his successful bid for the lead in his #79. John’s brother, Corey, planted his #29 tight in behind for second. Keegan settled for third. Corey waited in tight behind his bother as the laps clicked away. With two laps to go, Corey yanked his 5hp machine underneath John’s sprinter coming out of turn 2. Keegan jumped all over Corey’s bumper making it a 3-car slugfest. Corey got his #29 some separation from the other two contestants.

At the line, it was Corey’s #29 with the win. Jon McKennedy scrapped and fought for second. A determined and relentless Keegan snatched third. Derrik Baker and Eli Lussier rounded out the top five. In the Junior Mini-Cup division, Jona Hauge rocketed his #40 MMRA Mini-Cup car to victory lane.

Caution flew on lap 2, as polesitter, James Galloway looped his #3 machine exiting turn 2. On the re-start, it was Hauge squirting out front. Jesse Conklin’s #28 was now second. At the halfway mark, lap traffic reared it’s ugly head. Hauge got through unscathed. A hard-charging Conklin wasn’t so lucky. The young man fell behind a few car lengths after chewing all over Hauge’s bumper.

Fate reared it’s ugly head also as Bobby Martin looped his #91 out in turn 2, setting up a green/white/checker re-start with one lap to go. On that very critical restart, it was Hauge asserting his presence up front. At the stripe, it was Hauge with the win. Conklin settled for second.

The Senior Box Stock Division also took to the track for their first Saturday night appearance under the lights. Matt Smith scooted his #52 racer out in front early and never looked back. The young man nailed down his 25-lap feature event.

Kevin Goodfield’s #3 machine seemed to be hooked up also. The two speed aces careened around the 1/5 mile oval, devastating the rest of the field.

It was now Smith with Goodfield two kart-lengths behind. With 3 laps to go, lap traffic grinned and smiled once again. Smith snuck his machine through unscathed. Goodfield also made it through, but the young man was forced to lay off the throttle a bit, costing him some valuable track position. At the stripe, it was Smith with the uncontested win. Goodfield grabbed up second, with Eric Varney, Jim Latouche, and Abby Diers rounding up the top five.
