Woody Pitkat Eyes Elusive National Title

Busy Season Starts This Weekend at Thompson Speedway

Stafford, CTWoody Pitkat’s 2007 accomplishments alone could make for a strong career resume in racing.  He finished second in points at both Stafford Motor Speedway and Thompson International Speedway in their Modified divisions.  He finished third in the point standings of the Late Model division at Stafford.  He also burst onto the scene of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, recording four top-10 finishes in only 10 starts.

But Pitkat still felt something was missing from his year.  For the second straight season, he came within just a few points of winning the Whelen All-American National Championship. He is chasing after that championship again this year and is looking for an improved start to his season to give him a boost.

“I want to try and get better finishes at Thompson,” said Pitkat.  “Last year, we were involved in an accident at the Icebreaker and that just really wasn’t a good way to start the season.  If we can come out of the gate on fire, I think that momentum could carry us through for the rest of the year.”

Momentum would also be beneficial for another run at the National Championship, which will also be aided by Pitkat intending to at least start the season running at all three of Connecticut’s NASCAR tracks.  He isn’t sure how long into the season that will continue, though, since continuing at Waterford will depend on how the Bud Nationals go for him on April 12th and 13th.

“Hopefully we’ll do pretty decent at Waterford,” said Pitkat.  “Doing well at Stafford, Thompson, and Waterford would be good for National Championship points.  I’m trying not to think about that too much, though.”

Another thing that Pitkat hopes will come of a strong start to his season is the possibility of getting an opportunity in a Whelen Modified or Camping World East car.  Given his finishes in tracks he’d never seen before (like a third at Mansfield Speedway while driving a Whelen Modified), this would seem like a realistic prospect.

Pitkat’s 2008 racing season will get started this Saturday, April 5th, with a 25-lap double feature for the Sunoco Modifieds at Thompson International Speedway.
