Points Major Concern For Speedbowl Competitors

Waterford, CT — When the final tally is made for the 2008 Waterford Speedbowl SK-Modified championship, May 10 may be one of the keys. Dennis Gada, seeking a record seventh championship, came back from a mid-race crash to finish 10TH and hold on to the division point lead.

Gada, who likes being atop the standings, will take an ever-so slim two-point edge on the streaking Keith Rocco into Saturday night’s 35-lap SK feature. It is the headliner of Little League Night at the Speedbowl.

The yearly Wiffleball Home Run Derby sponsored by www.sidsvault.com featuring teams comprised of Speedbowl drivers and Little Leaguers, is also on a program that includes a 30-lap Late Model feature and 20 lappers for the Sportsman, Mini Stocks and Legends.

Little Leaguers in uniform along with their coaches, will be admitted free. The front gates open at 4PM and qualifying kicks off a 5.

Rocco, a Speedbowl regular again, will be after a third-straight victory, not an easy chore at the demanding shoreline oval. Unlike the state’s other tracks, it is “momentum track” where driver skills are foremost. Gada, like Rocco a two-time winner this year, is the master.

Young Tyler Chadwick’s string of top-five finishes has him very much in the race as well. He sits just 12 back in third. Defending champion Rob Janovic Jr. and Jeff Pearl both hope to continue strong efforts of late. Pearl battled to a second place last week with a strong performance in the outside lane.

Tight point battles are raging elsewhere as well. Despite three wins, defending Late Model champion Bruce Thomas Jr. can’t get away from Ron Yuhas Jr., the latter back to the Speedbowl on a full-time basis in both SKs and Late Models. Only 10 points separate them.

The popular Yuhas, who scored his first-ever Late Model win earlier this season, and Thomas staged an epic side-by-side battle last week. Tim Jordan, third in points, has also entered the points picture.

Two-time champion Moose Douton and Al Stone III are separated by a scant two points on top of the Sportsman rundown. Defending Mini Stock champion Ken Cassidy Jr. is making consistency count for a 10-edge on three-time winner Randy Churchill while a dozen points separate the top three Legends competitors Palmer, Michael Gervais Jr. and Shaun Buffington.

Last week’s winner Jason Palmer is 10 up on defending champion Michael Gervais Jr. and 12 better than Shaun Buffington in Legends points.
