Chris Perley, Bobby Santos, III, & Norm Wrenn Score CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday Wins at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT Tuesday night, July 8th, was the 5th annual CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday program at Stafford Motor Speedway. Chris Perley scored his third ISMA Supermodified feature victory at Stafford in five years by winning the 50-lap feature, Bobby Santos, III was the winner of the 30-lap NEMA Midget feature, and Norm Wrenn was the winner of the 25-lap Pro-4 Modified feature event.

In the 50-lap ISMA Supermodified feature event, it was Chris Perley taking his third victory at Stafford in five years. Kelly Miller took the lead at the green and he led the first 17 laps before Mike Lichty took over the race lead. Lichty had his car working in the high groove, as he took second from Jeff Abold and the lead from Miller on the high side. But Lichty’s good run ended one lap later as a flat right rear tire ended his night against the turn 1 wall, which gave the lead of the race back to Miller.

Miller then held the lead until lap-29 when Russ Wood made a pass for the lead in the high groove. Miller’s good run ended with a blown engine with 36 laps complete that brought the caution flag out. Perley had moved from fifth to second on a previous restart, and he took the lead from Wood two laps after the next restart. Perley and Wood slowly pulled away from the rest of the field for a two-car duel to the finish. Perley built up a small lead over Wood, but Wood began to reel Perley back in during the closing laps. A lapped car gave Perley the margin he needed on the second to last lap of the race as Wood got hung up and Perley went on to take the victory. Rounding out the top-5 behind Perley and Wood was Bentley Warren, Abold, and Jeff Holbrook.

In the 30-lap NEMA Midget feature event, it was Bobby Santos, III taking the win one year after his sister Erica took the CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday checkered flag. The race took the green with Jon Seaman, Sr. taking the lead ahead of Erica Santos, Greg Stoehr, Bobby Santos, III, and John Zych. Randy Cabral was the car on the charge at the start of the race, slicing through traffic after an issue in his heat race put him at the back of the starting grid. Seaman held the lead until lap-10 when Santos made his move for the lead in turn 2. Cabral was up to third place at that point and he followed Santos past Seaman. From that point on, it was a two-car show as Santos and Cabral pulled away from the rest of the field as they dueled for the lead. Cabral looked several times to have a run on Santos, but Santos was able to hold Cabral off lap after lap. Santos was able to navigate lapped traffic a bit better than Cabral over the final laps, which gave Santos the margin he needed as he drove to the checkered flag in a caution free race. Rounding out the top-5 behind Santos and Cabral was Seaman, Jeff Horn, and Erica Santos.

In the 25-lap Pro-4 Modified feature it was Norm Wrenn taking the win. George Sherman took the lead at the green with Tyler Anderson hot on his bumper. Sherman began to slowly open his lead up, but on lap-8 Sherman got out of shape in turn 4 and fell back to sixth place in line, handing the lead of the race over to Wrenn. Wrenn then had to contend with Rob Richardi, Jr., who was applying pressure to Wrenn for the race lead. Wrenn was able to fend off the challenges of Richardi through several restart situations and he drove to the victory. Cory Cleary worked his way up to third at the finish behind Wrenn and Richardi, with Kevin Iannarelli and Sherman rounding out the top-5.
