Late Summer Variety Highlights Thompson Schedule

Old & New Will Shine This Week at Thompson

Thompson, CT —  The Thompson International Speedway will play host to two very different events this week and Modified Mania is just around the corner. Thursday Night Thompson Thunder (TNTT) will return following the big NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race this past week. This week’s TNTT will feature the NASCAR Whelen All American Series “Super Six” divisions in exciting, wheel-to-wheel racing competition.

The second event is the annual Vintage Antique Car Extravaganza slated for Saturday, August 23rd.  This very special event will feature on-track activity for a huge variety of classic race cars as well as static displays of some of the most pristine antique racers to be found anywhere.

The Thursday night race program will offer up a variety of NASCAR Whelen All American Series racing divisions. The list of race cars in competition is topped by the track’s Sunoco Modifieds. Add to this ultra-fast, exciting, open-wheel division impressive fields of Pro Stocks, Late Models, Limited Sportsman, Thompson Modifieds and Mini Stocks and race fans are in for a fun-filled evening of NASCAR racing.

The Vintage Antique Car Extravaganza is in its third year at Thompson and each year draws hundreds of antique and classic racers. The track’s pit area will be converted to a paddock and will be open to race fans of all ages. Cars will be on display and on the track between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM. Fans are urged to bring their youngsters and their cameras to capture some of the glorious history of auto racing in the United States.

The “vintage” day attracts not only a magnificent collection of racers ranging from Indy cars, sprint cars, midgets and stock cars, but it also attracts many of the drivers of these cars that ruled the tracks in days gone by. Photos and autographs are a big part of the day and fans are free to roam the huge paddock area and actually witness many of these race cars at full speed on the high-banked, 5/8ths mile Thompson oval.

Thompson International Speedway will host its next major event on the weekend of September 6th & 7th when Modified Mania returns for two spectacular days of competition that will offer some four hundred laps of feature event racing. The event has been called an open house for open wheels and will play host to six different types of modified race cars. Topping the list will be the incredible NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Their 150-lap main event will be the highlight of the weekend. Joining the “Tour” will be the thrilling True Value Modifieds, R.O.C. Modifieds, Thompson’s Sunoco and Thompson Modifieds and the Pro Four Modifieds.

Racers will practice and qualify on Saturday, September 6th and will compete in feature event racing beginning at 12 Noon on Sunday, September 7th. The track will host its popular fan appreciation party on that Sunday morning between 10 AM and 12 Noon. Virtually all of the race cars in competition for that weekend will be assembled on the race tack for fans to view up close.
