Waterford Speedbowl’s 2010 Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday Champions Honored

Waterford, CT — Waterford Speedbowl officially crowned its Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday champions on Wednesday evening, celebrating 10 years of the popular mid-week racing series. Four champions were first-timers, with one repeat titlist. Leading the way was Anthony Flannery of East Hampton, who dominated the Wednesday night Legends Cars Series to take his first track championship. Windham, New Hampshire racer Taylor Martin took the Bandolero title in her first full season at the track. Charles Beal of Ledyard won the Super X-Car division standings and Dan D’addario of Columbia was the X-Car champion following his first full year competing in the class. Richard “Bubby” Brouwer of Waterford was the X-Modified champion, his second in the division.

Flannery, who turned 16-years old in July, won the first eight Wednesday race events which was a Speedbowl record for consecutive wins to start any season in the track’s 60-year history. He finished the year with 10 victories on Wednesday night to win the title going away. Overall, Flannery amassed 13 consecutive wins in the Legends Cars combining Wednesday and Saturday events during a stretch from late April through early July, another track record.

Martin’s title marks the first by a female driver at the historic shoreline oval in a division other than the track’s “Women on Wheels” program, which has staged all-women race events and ‘Powder Puff’ races over the years. Several champions have been crowned within that series, but Martin’s serves as the first in one of the core race divisions at the Speedbowl. Martin completed the season with 5 wins and finished every event in the top-ten, the only Bandolero driver to do so.

Beal won just one race in route to the Super X title, however, he led the division in top-ten finishes with 14 of them in 15 events. Mike Maskell of Quaker Hill, runner-up to Beal in the standings, was the only other competitor to place the same amount of top-tens. Beal also had nine top-five finishes on the year. He improved his consistency from 2009 when he finished third in the Wednesday standings. Beal joins his grandfather, popular past Modified racer Ed Yerrington as a champion. Yerrington won the 1970 Stafford Motor Speedway Modified crown and Beal’s uncle Ed Yerrington Jr. who won a title at the Speedbowl in 1979.

D’addario finished the X-Car season strong, using two wins in the final three events to rally past Glen Thomas Jr. in the standings in one of the most exciting championship battles the Wednesday division has seen. D’addario, who is 18-years old, led the division in top-five and top-ten finishes, with 12 and 14 respectively. He was the only driver to finish each of his starts in the top-ten and added three wins on the year.

Brouwer added a second X-Modified championship to his trophy collection. A seasoned veteran, he claimed the final three wins of the year to cement his crown. In all he claimed 6 victories on the year out of 10 division races. Brouwer was also the 2007 X-Modified champion.

The Speedbowl is still in action two nights a week through the fall. On Saturday evenings through October 2nd, NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action takes to the track. The championships are all still up for grabs in the Saturday standings. The Finale Weekend for racing is October 9-10th weekend.
