Wild N Wacky Wednesday 07/11/ Results

Waterford, CT — Waterford Speedbowl was back on track Wednesday evening for another round of Wild ‘n Wacky competition. Scoring victories on the night included Matt Pappa of Nassau, NY, a national points leader in Legend Cars competition that continued his hot streak at the Speedbowl. Sharing wins in twin Bandolero division features included Jacob Perry of Pawcatuck, picking up his first career Speedbowl win, and Jacob Urch of West Suffield. Glen Thomas Jr. of Groton won his first X-Car feature of the year and Ken Downing III of Branford in Super X-Car racing. Christopher Lee of Uncasville won the Wacky Race for the night.

In the 20-lap Legend Cars feature, Pappa took over the race lead on lap-5 following two early caution periods. Once the field settled into racing, Pappa was unstoppable at the front. He had to hold on one additional yellow flag at halfway on lap-10 for debris on the race track before cruising to his sixth victory of the Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday season. Joe Mucciacciaro of Wolcott ran with the leaders all race to claim second, passing Dana Dimatteo of Farmington for the position with two laps remaining. Dave Garbo Jr. of Stonington fought Dimatteo for third at the checkered flag, taking the position by inches. Jason Palmer of Berlin rounded out the top-five.

Perry picked up a first-ever Speedbowl victory in a 20-lap Bandolero features by dominating the first of two main events for the Speedbowl’s youngest racers. Perry moved to second on the opening lap, then passed race leader Corey Comeroski of Lebanon with an inside maneuver in turns three and four on lap-3. Once in the lead, Perry pulled out to a convincing victory in a race that went caution free over the final 19-laps. Perry is a third generation racer, following in the footsteps of successful lineage which includes his grandfather Roger Perry and father Dennis Perry. Derek Debbis of Oakdale and Jacob Urch of West Suffield finished in second and third.

The second 20-lap Bandolero feature ran clean without a caution flag slowing the pace set by Alan Eastman Jr. Eastman was seeking his second win of the year, setting a quick pace. Urch rode in second position right on Eastman’s bumper over the first half of the race before turning up the pressure just at halfway. Urch finally found the fast way around, getting to Eastman’s inside on lap-14 through turns one and two to take over. Once in the lead, Urch never looked back and took down the win.

The 20-lap X-Car race saw a first time winner on the year in Thomas. Two cautions before any laps were completed slowed the pace before Craig Miner of Higganum raced into the lead. Miner ran well at the head of the field until Thomas came into the picture, taking second from perennial contender Brad Voglesong of Middletown. Once in second position, Thomas went to work on the leader, taking over command from Miner on lap-9. Thomas held the lead through two restarts in the second half of the event, the final coming on lap-14. Voglesong overtook Miner to chase Thomas through the finish, however Thomas was too strong and won by two car lengths. Behind Voglesong, Wayne Shifflett of Preston was third while Miner ended up in fourth position.

The 20-lap Super X-Car feature saw Downing battle with Ken Cassidy Sr. of Lisbon for the lead from the start. Downing used the outside lane to prevail on lap-2 to move to the lead. Downing stayed ahead of a battle for the top-five positions that got wild at times during the race. Four caution flags slowed the race, but Downing was up to the task on each restart. Downing was never seriously challenged and went on to the victory over Jim Boyle of East Windsor and Dan Butler of Waterford.

Lee finished the Wacky Toll Booth Race first in a test of speed and accuracy around the Speedbowl’s three eighths mile oval. Competitors raced a 5-lap event where they had to deposit a token into a toll booth bucket on three laps. The first competitor to finish the event, and score their tokens in the bin, was the winner.
