Hall of Famer Billy Harman Recovering from Serious Surgery

NEAR Hall of Famer Billy Harman is home recovering from a seven day stay at Backus Hospital in Norwich, Ct. Bill underwent intestinal surgery after a serious infection was found, which doctors first thought could be cancer. Fortunately the doctors said no cancer was found and the severe pain was caused by the stomach infection. In talking to my close friend yesterday, Bill said the doctors found five lesions around the liver and the doctor said the infection in his stomach looked like an explosion. Billy is experiencing a great deal of discomfort and will be laid up for the next few weeks. It was just a few short weeks ago Bill lost his wife Donna after a loosing fight with cancer. Who knows how much stress from that loss could have contributed to Bill's illness.

Bill, who was inducted into the New England Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2004, started racing at the then New London/Waterford Speedbowl in 1959 earning Rookie of the Year honors. 1960 would see Bill capture his first of many races over the next two decades. 1965 saw Billy moving on to NASCAR and racing four or more times a week in the Roland Ballenger #302 and over the next couple of decades Billy drove for some of the best car owners of the times.
