Rough Riders Prepare for Thunder Road Debut

BARRE, VT — When Thursday night events start at Barre’s Thunder Road this Thursday, June 20, there will be a new twist on the Nation’s Site of Excitement’s racing card: The Rough Riders are coming to town.

The Rough Riders, are a division of 6-cylinder cars, ten years old or older, designed to introduce competitors to racing in a way that is cheap, simple, and most of all, fun. The cars will be painted with family friendly themes, and will have their first event of 2013 on the high banks this Thursday, June 20.

Part of the fun will be some good old-fashioned father-son competition from the most recent pair of entries sent in by Justin and Randy Johnson. Justin, who is just 18 years of age, will be racing with his father Randy for the first time.

“I’ve been going to Thunder Road my entire life. I’ve done two Enduros there and when I saw the rules package for the Rough Riders, my Dad and I took one look at it and thought we had to give it a try. I think this is going to be great,” said Justin. “I can’t wait to start racing more, and I’m really excited to be racing with my Dad,” he finished.

Driver’s Ed instructor Paul Dudley is also preparing a ride for the new division.

“I have been coming to Thunder Road since I was a kid in the 80’s. Like everyone else in the stands I always wanted to be part of a real class, but I could never afford it until now,” said Dudley. “I love the idea of making the car into a character, too. The fans will love it, especially the kids!”
