PIT BOX: Title Time For Mods
• Two races remain on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West slate, starting with the NAPA Auto Parts/Toyota 150 presented by Axle Crutch Saturday night in Roseville, California. It’s a tight championship race for the 2015 title as Noah Gragson leads Chris Eggleston by just two tallies while Ryan Partridge (-6) and Gracin Raz (-16) are also squarely in the title hunt. Christian PaHud won this race at All American Speedway last year.
• The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship will be settled this Sunday at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park with the season finale Sunoco World Series 150. Defending tour titlist Doug Coby and 2013 champion Ryan Preece enter the race tied atop the standings while Woody Pitkat – looking for his first crown – is just four tallies back in third place. Preece is the defending Sunoco World Series 150 winner, but Coby has won all three trips to the famed Connecticut oval this year and is looking to become just the third driver in history to sweep a season of Whelen Modified Tour events at Thompson.
• Race No. 2 of the NASCAR Mexico Series’ Desafio playoff will take place Sunday afternoon with the Aguascalientes 240. Santiago Tovar won the series’ first 2015 trip to Autódromo Internacional de Aguascalientes while NASCAR XFINITY Series rookie Daniel Suarez was victorious in this event last year. NASCAR Next driver Ruben Garcia won the first race of the Desafio and has a four-point lead on Irwin Vences entering the weekend.
LOOKING BACK
• Tommy Lemons Jr. took the checkered flag Sunday in the Valley Star Credit Union 300 at Martinsville Speedway. In arguably the most famous NASCAR-sanctioned late model event on the annual calendar, Lemons won a door-to-door battle with NASCAR Camping World Truck Series regular Timothy Peters coming to the checkered flag for his second win in three years in the Virginia short-track showcase. NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Champion Lee Pulliam finished as the runner-up in the 42-car field that included a host of current and former NASCAR state and track champions.
