Southern Super Series to Mix Things Up with CRA at Nashville
CONCORD, N.C. — The Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco is off to Music City, USA this weekend for the second race of the 2016 season, but this one has quite a twist. Instead of just a traditional 100-lap race format, the series has a doubleheader this weekend at the historic Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee in what has been dubbed the North/South Super Late Model Challenge.
So here’s how this all works. On Friday, April 8, the Southern Super Series and the ARCA/CRA Super Series will each run a 50-lap feature. These races will be points-counting races awarding championship points for each series.
Drivers who aren’t necessarily “full-time” racers with each series will race with the series that is in their region. Southern drivers will race with the Southern Super Series, while Northern racers will compete with the ARCA/CRA Super Series.
Then on Saturday, April 9, both series will come together to run a 75-lap non-points race.
The top 12 finishers from Friday’s two races will transfer into Saturday’s 75-lap Challenge. The rest of the 32-car field will be made up of four transfer cars from Saturday morning’s last-chance race, and two provisionals for each series. Those 32 drivers will fight it out for a $5,000 payday on Saturday afternoon.
Each race on Friday is a four-tire race. Teams are allowed to put on two new tires for Saturday’s race.
“From a fan’s perspective I think it’s going to be very exciting,” said Tim Bryant, the promoter of the Southern Super Series. “You have the Southern Super Series guys shooting it out for 50 laps and then the CRA guys shooting it out for 50 laps. Then we’ll combine the best of the best for the 75-lap finale. I think it has the potential to be a very exciting race. At the end of the day we are fielding two top-flight series with great competitors in each and putting them on the same track at the same time. I just can’t see anything but excitement.”
The winners of each race will get a Crosley mini Jukebox to fit with the Music City theme. Nashville’s trophies are always unique because they can actually be used to play music. Whether it’s the famous guitar, or these jukeboxes, the winner of the race can still jam out to a good tune.
Plenty of great drivers are expected to be at Nashville for the first North/South Super Late Model Challenge. Kyle Busch Motorsports NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers Christopher Bell, William Byron and Cody Coughlin are all entered. 2014 SSS champion Bubba Pollard is entered, as is Steve Wallace, Zane Smith, Kenzie Ruston and more.
Race fans that cannot make it out to Nashville this weekend don’t have to worry about missing the races. Speed51.com will carry the action from both days of racing with a live video stream beginning with qualifying on Friday.
