Scully Jr, Estrella, Cavallaro & Teague Grab Wins on Everetts Night

Tom Scully Jr. finally shook that monkey off his back on Saturday night in the Pro Stock division, scoring the win in the 40 lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series feature. Some of you may have read that and wondered how Scully could have had a monkey on his back even though he was leading the point standings, but it is because he had not yet visited victory lane this season.

With the way the handicapp system works here at Seekonk, Scully lined up third for the feature event behind the wheel of his No. 2. He got to the lead right away, getting by Bobby Pelland III in the first few laps and working the rest of the way from the lead. He was able to use whatever lanes he wanted to use and hold the advantage right down to the final laps. Perhaps even bigger than the actual win was the fact that he was able to increase his championship lead a little bit over Angelo Belsito and Fred Astle.

Belsito was able to come to the front late and finish second, but Astle had some front end damage and ended up crossing the line outside the top five. It will be an intense battle between those three guys going down to the finish. Rick Martin finished third Saturday, with Pelland and Kyle Casper rounding out the top five. It was Casper’s best run of the season.

Can anyone beat Dylan Estrella in the Late Model class? If they can, it’s going to be extremely hard to do it. Estrella got out front extremely early on in Saturday’s Crab Manchester Memorial 50 lap feature race and never looked back in route to his victory. The only stumble in the road for Estrella was a late race battle between him and young driver Austin Blais.

Blais got up to the outside pole position and on the final restart, he didn’t give up easily. Blais went in hard and picked the gas up as quickly as he could, fighting to get ahead in the final laps. Even though he was able to inch ahead a few times, he wasn’t able to complete the pass, but that didn’t matter for Blais. He had won the week before and was thrilled with a second place finish behind the wheel of his No. 16. Jeramme Lille came home third and that was an amazing run for him. Lille has been struggling some with the handling this season and it was nice to see him up there at the end.

In Saturday’s 25 lap Street Stock feature race, Mike Teague and Scott Serydnski put on a battle that had fans on the edge of their seats. In the final laps, Serydynski used the outside lane of Teague and fought hard trying to go for glory. He slid up the track coming to the white flag and at the end, it was Teague edging out for the victory. Teague has been coming closer and closer to visiting victory lane and it was nice to see someone different carry the checkered flag at the end of the hard fought race. A thumbs up to Scott Bruneau, who used a backup car that was scheduled to be driven by Kyle Casper and wheeled it to a solid run to keep his points lead.

The 25 lap Sports Truck feature went right down the wire, but it was former champion Mike Cavallaro scoring the big win and extending his points lead. Barry Shaw and John Paiva seemed to be set for battle down to the end, but the two got together and both went into the wall and it ended their chances. Cavallaro was right behind them and ready to pounce and it ended up working out in his favor. Congrats goes out to Mike Lopes for scoring another top five finish — he is getting closer and closer to visiting victory lane.

Looking ahead, don’t forget about the return of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour to Seekonk on Saturday Sept. 10. That one will be a race for the ages.
