Mother Nature Wins Out at Evans Mills Speedway for Third Consecutive Week

EVANS MILLS, NY – Mother Nature has not been kind to many tracks and racers in the Northeast in recent weeks, with Evans Mills Speedway bearing the brunt of it. For the third consecutive week, the planned Opening Night festivities at the 3/8-mile asphalt oval had to be postponed this past Sunday, as Mother’s Day sun alternated all afternoon with clouds, rain, thunder, and even hail.

“It is always a tough decision to cancel a race event,” stated Operations Manager Tracy Chirico, “but even more so when all of us – the racers, the fans, and the track crew – are anxious to get back to racing after a long winter.”

There has still been plenty of action going on in the office, as several new marketing partners have signed on. Preparations are underway for the speedway to take part in the 7th Annual Two Nations 1000 Islands Extravaganza Car, Truck, and Bike Show this coming Friday through Sunday, May 19-21 at Cerow Rec Park in Clayton. Additionally, the speedway will have a presence in the Watertown Armed Forces Day Parade on Saturday.

Chirico commented, “We are hopeful that the forecasted change in weather patterns beginning this week will work in our favor, as we are anticipating a season packed with excitement for all of our drivers and fans.”

Open practice will continue to take place every Wednesday beginning at 4 pm and running until dusk. The cost for practice is $25 per car. There is no cost for spectators.

Opening Night will now take place on Sunday, May 21, which is also Black Diamond Heat Night. The Opening Night festivities will include the long-awaited debut of the Mills Modified crate engine asphalt Modified class, as well as action in the Legends, Bandolero, Pro Stock, Thunder Stock, and 4 Cylinder Truck divisions. The Classic Asphalt Modified class is also slated to make an appearance.

Gates will open at 12:30 pm, with hot laps at 1:30 pm, and racing set to go green at 3 pm. The pit entry fee for the 2017 season is $25, with the fee waived for Bandolero drivers. Grandstand admission is just $10, and children age 15 and under are admitted free. There is a $2 discount for military with valid ID. VIP booth upgrades are available.
