Seekonk Speedway Set to Open 74th Season of Racing
SEEKONK, Mass. — An action-packed two days of action at Seekonk Speedway will help to open the 74th season of competition at the third-mile this weekend, May 4-5.
Saturday, the eighth annual Car Show & Go will take place at the historic Massachusetts oval, as fans will have the chance to see some vintage machines and multiple different types of automobiles in the front parking lot. The event is hosted by Mass Cruisers and there will be a full slate of entertainment by Crusin Bruce Palmer for fans to enjoy.
The action on the track itself heats up at 1 p.m., while some of the cars make the move into the pit area and onto the race track to compete in a short session of burn out drags, where trophies will be awarded to the winners. All of this action takes place while fans have the opportunity to visit the show and enter the grandstands for free throughout the duration of the day.
On top of the show and burn out drags, NASCAR Whelen All-American Series race teams will have one more tune-up session throughout the day, as teams hope to tune their cars to perfection ahead of the season-opener. During the day, fans can also visit the grandstands for free to watch the Pro Stocks, Late Models, Sportsman, and Sports Trucks take their final practice laps before the beginning of the year.
Sunday, race fans and teams from across New England will come together at the third-mile for the 74th season opener as each of the four divisions compete in power-five events. David Darling (Pro Stock) begins his title defense in Seekonk’s premiere division — a class that saw a major overhaul to the rules over the offseason in hopes of putting racing back into the driver’s hands.
The Late Models have a long list of competitors seeking the first checkered flag, while the Sportsman division opens with a full field of competitors looking to continue to produce some of the best racing that New England has to offer. In the Sports Trucks, with the last two champions moving away from competition in the division, a new champion could be on the horizon.
Sunday, pits open for race teams at 9 a.m., and practice begins at 11 a.m. The front gates open for fans at 12 p.m., followed by the qualifying time trial session for the Pro Stock division at 1 p.m. Action begins at 2 p.m. with the Troy City Tactical Spectator Drags opener, while the Trucks, Everett’s Auto Parts Late Models, Helger’s Southcoast Power Equipment Sportsman and Pro Stocks compete in qualifying and feature racing action to follow.
All four divisions will run five extra laps to open their season, as the Sports Trucks go 30 laps, the Late Models run 35 laps, the Sportsman run 35 in the Helger’s Southcoast Power Equipment Power 5 and the Pro Stocks run 45 in the Tomassi Law Associates Power 5 event.
