Gray Extends Win Total to 5 on Central Asphalt Independence Day Spectacular

N. Woodstock, NH — Patriotic fervor brings the excitement out at the racetrack and Saturday night at White Mountain Motorsports Park was no different. The pits flooded with championship chasers and invaders from the Twin States and beyond, converging on the Independence Day spectacular looking to wow the crowd!

Starting the night off was a solid field of Dad’s 4 By Tool & Supply Kid’s Division machines. Led to point by Kylee Potter and Walker Fitch, drama would flare just shy of the halfway point with defending division winner Austin Sicard putting Bentley Robbin and Fitch in a pinch, getting all crossed up on the frontstretch to bring out the yellow. Returning to green, Logan Farnsworth found his way to the front to put his patriotic #22 S-10 into victory lane for the second time this season. Walker Fitch and Kylee Potter took home second and third.

Following a stellar annual special last time out, the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis kept the thrills up for another week in the Mountains. After leading the outside lane at the start, rookie Patrick Switser was sent pit-side with a leaking gas tank to start a hard luck night. With Anthony Gavell at the helm, Vermont invader Jeffrey Martin pounced into the picture to take second and stalk the first-time winner at the front. The final caution set up a duel between the two with point leader Kristian Switser and defending champion Chris Moulton in the cat-bird seat. Under the popsicle sticks Switser made a daring move, cut a tire and started backtracking through the field. Leaving a lane, Moulton would jump below Martin and Gavell under the white flag and lead the field home. Chris Moulton took down his first win of the 2023 season followed by Anthony Gavell and Todd Derrington to round out the podium.

The Foley Oil & Propane Late Models put on a barnburner with several invading teams joining the Independence Day festivities. Led to green by Pat Patten and rookie Kyle Goodbout, Patten quickly found his ride amiss and bunched up the outside lane causing Mike Jurkowski, Justin Eldridge and point leader Kasey Beattie. Up front for the restart, both Patten and Stacy Cahoon would duke it out until a slowing Patten again bunched up the outside lane to take the noses off the Quinny Welch and Mike Clark rides. With the front now under the command of Stacy Cahoon, Mark Patten would snatch the lead away just one lap after the restart with a crossover under the multi-time champ.

In the final laps, Massachusetts invader Ryan Kuhn would close in on the leaders before North Haverhill’s Ryan Olsen took over the top spot after pressure from behind sent Mark Patten sliding up the track in turn two. Ryan Olsen would take the win and bunch his ticket to the Late Model All-Star Race at Thunder Road alongside the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) event on Thursday, July 20th. Kasey Beattie would turn his early misfortune around to take second with Ryan Kuhn taking third.

Former champion Jason Woodard and longtime New England standout Joey Laquerre would start round two for the Central Asphalt Flying Tiger Triple Crown Series at the front of the pack. Woodard would quickly take off with the lead, but his motor would take off from him on lap 14. Sputtering and skipping across the line, Woodard flew sideways in turn one to call out the first caution, his day ended with an uncooperative engine. 2023 White Mountain rivals Brandon Gray and John Donahue were left to lead the field back to green, putting on hard racing at the front before Gray took the upper hand.

With Gray extending his lead, second through tenth were nose-to-tail and tight as could be, each looking for the slightest advantage on the others. The final caution would fly on lap 69 for the spinning Jim Paquette in turn four for a final six-lap shootout. Gray would ultimately get the jump and cross the line first to take his fifth-straight win of the season. John Donahue would take second followed by Thunder Road invader Mike MacAskill on his second-straight third-place finish in extra-distance Flying Tiger competition.

Thunder returns to the Mountains for the Midseason Championships on Saturday, July 8th! With Double Points on the line in all divisions, it’s a crucial summer showdown in the championship chase. All six divisions will be in action including the Foley Oil & Propane Late Models, Fisher Auto Parts Flying Tigers, Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis, Ammonoosuc Asphalt Mini Late Models, Wayne’s Market Dwarf Cars and the Dad’s 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Division for this can’t miss event!
