Competitors Await Pepsi 300 Qualifying

Waterford, CT — It being the “year of speed” at Waterford Speedbowl, competitors are looking forward with great anticipation to qualifying for the Saturday night, July 5 Pepsi 300. Often called the “Midseason Championship,” it offers 300 laps of feature racing including century grinds for the SK-Modifieds and Late Models.Traditionally, time trials are used to qualify. It is the only opportunity the Late Models, Sportsman and Mini Stocks have to test themselves against the clock. It is one of only two opportunities for the SKs (the other being the Nationals). There are serious bragging rights involved.

Competition speeds have been extraordinary this year and it stands to reason existing standards (all set in Pepsi 300 qualifying) are in jeopardy. KENNY HORTON owns the SK record, a 14.061 set last year. DENNIS BOTTICELLO’s 15.446 Late Model standard is three years old. The 17.417 posted by JOE GODBOUT III set in 2006 will be the Mini Stock target while the Sportsman record (17.465) was established by Al Stone III last year.

The Pepsi 300 is also the middle step in the Bowl’s “Triple Crown.”
