Concord, NC — When race fans bring their kids to Greenville-Pickens Speedway each and every week, they want to share in their love for great short track racing. Greenville-Pickens Speedway is one of those places that just makes for great racing. And that will be no different when families come to the PASS South Super Late Model “Howler” event on October 27th at the historic track.
But the evening won’t only be about action on the track for families to share in. There will be plenty of action off of the track as well, and once again, it’s PASS South leading the way. The evening’s events include trick or treating with the teams during the autograph session and a costume contest for kids. Adults can dress up as well if they like.
“This really started last season with the Easter Bunny 150,” said PASS South owner and promoter, Tom Mayberry. “At that event, we got the fans more involved by having the Easter Bunny make an appearance and we had an Easter Egg hunt down on the track. The fans loved it and it was a big part of making the Easter Bunny 150 an annual event that people can look forward to.
“We want to do the same thing with the Howler. It’s the type of event that can grow into something people can look forward to every year. This kind of stuff brings back memories of the old days when racing was a full family outing. By getting the kids involved and interested in it, we can make them fans of the cars and the drivers just like the parents are. We think it’s a neat opportunity and something we could brand into a yearly event.”
WESC 92.5FM, The Racing Station, will sponsor the Racing Trick of Treat portion of the event and children’s costume contest. The station will award prizes to the winners, as judged by local on-air personalities for WESC.
PASS South encourages all of the teams competing at Greenville-Pickens to bring several bags of candy with them to the autograph session to pass out to the trick of treaters.
In addition to the activities for kids, the “Howler” event will also feature commemorative t-shirts for fans to buy. 51 Sports is designing a special “Howler” t-shirt that will only be available for sale at the track.
“This is the perfect opportunity for a t-shirt for fans to buy to remember the first of what will hopefully be a long-standing tradition,” added Mayberry. “We did t-shirts at the first running of the Mason-Dixon Meltdown at they were a huge hit. We sold out of several sizes of shirts and all the sweatshirts we’d made. We actually had to order more and ship them to people because they were so popular. We think the Howler t-shirts will be the same. And the shirts look great to boot. People will love to buy one.”
The PASS South event at Greenville-Pickens will mark the return of Super Late Models to the hallowed facility. The “Howler” is the next to last event of the 2007 season for the Southeast Super Late Model touring series. Right now, two-time winner Ryan Lawler and Heath Hindman, the most recent PASS South winner (at Hickory at the end of September) are locked into a tight points race. Just 12 points separate the two.
The schedule for the “Howler” begins with an open practice session on Friday, October 26th. On Saturday, gates open for the 150-lap event on at 9am, with practice beginning at noon. Qualifying is set to begin at 2:30pm with heat races beginning at 6pm. The PASS South feature event is scheduled to go off approximately at 8:30pm.
